Out of curiousity, I checked what it would cost to eBay one to Canada - the answer is 32$ for the blaster and another 19$ for shipping. Of course, I can just go buy one in a local shop - for 24$ CAD, so not too far out of line from the USD price in the States - but there's lots of things I can't do that with, and then, well, it gets expensive. And I'm just next door without a pesky ocean in the way!

No, I'm not. But I think this might just be temporary. The toy scene is sometimes strange, you can see this all the time with the Hasbro helmets. I remember you couldn't get Hasbro's Iron Man helmet some time ago. It just wasn't available anywhere. One could find a few shops who still offered one and the prices on Amazon, ebay, etc. went ridiculously high. I remember one shop wanted to have over 900$, another one 700! No idea if they actually found somebody who paid that price but that's what they asked for it. Then, suddenly, Hasbro delivered a huge load of freshly produced helmets, they were available everywhere again and suddenly the prices went back to the 120 bucks they were supposed to cost or even less! Other Black Series helmets had crazy ups and downs in prices as well.
It's even more strange when one medium affects another. I remember Howard the Duck, the comic book, being a big hit when it was first released and soon issue #1 was going for $100 or more. Then that stupid movie came out, and at the next convention I attended they were literally handing everyone a copy of Howard the Duck #1 free as they walked through the door.
