Need Infos For A Jack Sparrow Compass Scratchbuild [UPDATE 05/27/09]

As the title says I'm looking for infos for a PotC Jack Sparrow Compass Scratchbuild. Since most threads are dealing with a toy conversion they don't offer the informations required for building the thing from scratch using the real materials. I remember that someone posted pictures he made of a screenused one displayed at Disneyland a while ago, but that thread unfortunately seems to be gone.

I would be really thankful for anything, may it be photos, screenshots, blueprints, measurements, infos about materials or any input about possible differences between the movie versions (was the one used in the first movie identical to the one used in the sequels?), really, any help would be highly appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Need Infos For A Jack Sparrow Compass Scratchbuild

The blueprints and photos in above posted link are of the FIRST movie compass.

The second movie compass had slight changes to the inner dial mechanism to make it read more clearly for the actions required of it in the story.

The MR version is based on the SECOND movie version, which I will assume stayed the same in the third movie.

If you google JACK SPARROW COMPASS you should find plenty of pics of the MR version.

Good luck with your project -- if you end up[ making the FIRST version and decide to make extras to sell (or even kit pieces to sell), keep me in mind as I have been looking for a nice replica of the first version. In fact, I would be willing to buy the inner dial pieces and modify an existing toy.

Re: Need Infos For A Jack Sparrow Compass Scratchbuild

Thanks guys!

I was comparing screenshots and rewatched the PotC Blu-Ray over the weekend and the main differences from the compass used in the first movie compared to the design in the sequels are pretty clear to me now. The graphics on the floating disc are different, the stationary disc is much wider in the first one and the three bars holding it are positioned differently.

Here are the only two photos I found of the PotC 1 compass:

The idea of building a PotC compass came up a couple of days ago when a friend of mine watched the movies with his daughter and started building a compass for her using a piece of dark wood he found:

Note that this isn't aimed to be an accurate reproduction of a PotC compass, he was starting to build this for his daughter and get an idea how a screen accurate version could be done.

We discussed the different options and gladly he agreed with me that the PotC 1 compass looked better (lucky me, since I hate the sequels...), so this is the one we are trying to tackle now. Unfortunately since the compass wasn't used as prominently in the first movie as it was in the sequels, it is hard to get good pictures of it. So any helpful info on the PotC 1 compass is highly appreciated.

If there is someone owning the PotC 1 Blu-Ray and has the ability to take screenshots, I would be thankful for screenshots of the opened compass (00:18:03-00:18:05 and 01:03:42-01:03:44). I didn't find anything yet showing the hinge and how visible it is (or isn't) from the outside.

I'll see what i can dig up, but I am 99% sure that the OUTSIDE was pretty much the same on all versions -- it is the inner dial and little trident piece that rests on top of that dial that are the differences -- although the first movie compass looked more "brown" to me than the sequel versions, which seemed to be more "blue."

Any chance you or your friend will make MORE of these for sale?

Taking a look at the scene where Norrington is holding the compass it looks like a very dark brown to me, too.

Any chance you or your friend will make MORE of these for sale?

While I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility of a run our main target for the time being is to build our own compass. There are things we have to figure out at the moment, the one causing us the most headache is how to produce the upper disc in brass with the dial/scale on it.

Looking forward to seeing what comes of this. I've been stuck on the inner workings for a while now on mine.

It is nice to see these piratical props still being made!! So far it is looking real good!!!!! I love the inlays of the white wood! Very ivory like!:love

My friend added a few real brass parts :cool Just to remind you, this is still the compass he is building for his daughter which is not targeted to be 100% accurate. For example the dial will have some slight changes in the final version.

I am still looking for accurate dimensions and photos of the PotC 1 compass. Anyone with the ability to make screenshots from the Blu-Ray (see #4 for time codes)?

This looks AMAZING!! Please ask your friend if he would build another for me! Or what he would charge for various brass parts...very nice -- thanks for posting pics.

Ive got a toy convert, too... Its a great tutorial in the KttC. The cheapes prop Ive ever had... just bought a set with compass for $1... Shipping was $15 to gemany, but that doesnt matter.

It was really fun to convert that compass... I think about to order 5 or 6 more and do it again and again... :lol

Thats my convert:

Nice work, gents.

For the money, the DISNEY STORE compass toy is by far the cheapest and easiest to convert into something that looks screen-used for costume use or simply to set out on your shelf.

They were in abundant supply last September, but may be harder to come by now.
