Greetings,
So for years I have had the hardest time with collars on armor and finally thought I should ask on here. So I mainly work with foam and ducktape patterns. I made a few that had collars and the way I did it was start with a straight piece and keep cutting it little at a time, until it sat flush around my shoulders and back, and would just be a terrible pain to keep the top edge level.

These kind of collars, this person is not me, but first pic i found with a similar collar.

Is there an easier way to do these collars? like a general pattern or a shape I follow on my chest pattern or something?

i would make a cardboard template, its cheap easy to alter then your have a template for foam. you could also mark out where all your insert cuts would be

That's what I normally do. Start with card stock and keep cutting or adding until I have the shape then use that as my template. But what I'm wondering if that's the only way.
Or is there a mathematical way to get a rough shape? Mayne using points on the chest pattern?
Or if anyone has a general collar template.

I'm wondering if there's a different way from how I do it now

i think mathematically everyone's body is in no way symmetrical even getting a full body 3d scan is not 100% because it would work once but your need to never loose or gain weight or get older, even other peoples patterns are a guide because it was made to there body shape.
Hope someone else chips in with a better idea

I think using a piece of cardstock would be a good start. The bottom of it has to match the contours of your shoulders...

But, as the costuming advisor said at the con: paper is cheap (you can tweak the pattern).
