NEED HELP! Trying to make patterns for coat and pants

My Halloween costume requires me to make a pair of simple pants (baggy, front and back sewn up the side, no pockets) and a jacket with a flap across chest, I guess double breasted style, but still simplistic.

The jacket is where I'm concerned.

I can sew and have no problem creating patterns for stuffed dolls, etc. but never had to make something that had to fit me.

Any advice or some pointing in the right direction for making the patterns?

I have plenty of photo reference material for what I'm making, but creating something flat that will eventually become a wearable piece of clothing worries me a little.

Thanks for any help anyone has to offer.

The quickest way to come up with a pattern that already fits you is to take apart something that already fits you.

If you have an old shirt and pair of pants in a very plain style, or can buy a cheap set at a thrift shop (in a woven not knit or stretchy fabric which distort too easily). Take them apart, make any alterations needed for the design and style you're going for and make a mock-up in some cheap fabric to see how it looks and for a final fitting.
