Need help dyeing a leather hat!

Let me explain. I bought a leather cowboy hat. I would say that it is a cheap, thin, brushed leather, suede, or even feux leather. It is a very light tan right now, I want to dye it to a medium to dark brown color. It doesn't need to be perfect, as I've chopped it up, and resewed it into a pirate tricorn. SO the end result can be of a mottled, old, trashed, mess. Let me know what kind of paint or dye you would suggest.

Go to Tandy Leather and get some All-in-one dye from there. They have both medium and dark brown. That'll do the job if you actually have leather. If you have something else, I'm not so sure. What is the texture like, both front and back? If it feels like skin, it's leather. If it's fuzzy, it's suede. If the back looks like fabric with a grid pattern to it, it's fake. But it may be something else entirely.

Thanks for the tip, I'll dig deeper into the material, never really took it apart enough to confirm the suede. As the brim has material on both sides, and the crown is material backed.

Make sure to get deglazer to remove the finish on the hat. Remove the finish will help aid in dyeing the leather.
