Need help/advice in making a helmet & armor

Seeing all of the work being done here with all of the various projects has gotten me really anxious to finally start on a pet project of mine that I've been dying to do for years now. I'm looking at doing a set of armor from the anime Southern Cross aka Robotech Masters, to be more specific I want to do this

Thing is, I've never done anything like this before and although reading the various threads here has given me some ideas there still are some things I'm not sure about. First off, I do plan on making casting this in fiberglass or one of the alternatives mentioned in other threads but it definitely won't be vacformed if that makes any difference in how I'll need to do things.

The first thing I plan on working on is the helmet, figured I'd work my way down, but I'm not entirely sure how I would mold it. I plan on using a cheapy Roman helmet as a base to get the general shape and for the neck guard but I'll need to make it a little pointier at the top, extend the neck guard forward, and of course add the greeblies and crest. The question I have is how would you recommend I go about making the crest? Should I A) cast the whole thing, supports and all, as one one piece, B) Break it down into crest, and supports as separate castings, or C) cast the crest alone as one piece, and cast the supports as part of the helmet?
