Neck fabric length/girth too much on spiderman mask from suit purchased at Printcostume

I ordered a Spiderman suit from Princostume, looks great, fits great. Tried the mask on briefly as I haven't cut eye holes out yet. The mask does not have a rear zipper. It has an elastic band at the bottom of the neck fabric. When I had it on, I took a selfie and it seems like the fabric is too long and maybe too "baggy". I workout a little and I wonder of my traps being higher up on the back of my neck makes it bunch up. Anyway, wondering if this is a typical issue? Does the zipper-less mask include the elastic band because of the lack of zipper? Maybe the neck fabric can be shortened and re-sewn? Do most people put the mask neck over or under the body suit neck? I wonder if it would "lay" better on my neck without the bottom elastic? Any ideas or advice would be great, thanks!

Hey there, I know this is really late, but I can totally relate. I just got my first printcostume suit and went with the same zipperless mask, and discovered the same issue you had. I thought about trimming it but didnt feel confident enough in my sewing to hem it in a way that allows it to stretch so my big head fits through. So, I decided to order a new mask ($20 plus shipping) with the zipper this time. Waiting on it to arrive but I’m thinking this will be better. I plan to lay the mask over the neck of the suit so it stops at the base of the neck. We’ll see how it goes but I also plan to sew on about 6 metal snaps so that the mask attaches to the suit, keeping it in place when I rotate my head.

Hey! So when I actually wore the whole suit I pulled the body neck over the mask neck and visually it looked ok. As I wore it the mask neck fabric would ride up and come out of the body neck. Which didn’t look good. But I think the solution is to sew buttons to the inside of the body neck and outside of the mask neck. Then when you put it on and snap the buttons it will hold the mask fabric down into the body neck and the buttons will be invisible. I only wore the suit once for Halloween, but I still have it and still want to sew the buttons on. I think the buttons might be the solution though. Let me know how things work out for you!

Nice! I can see that way working well too. I initially had the idea to Velcro and did a test with a backup mask and it went terribly lol. The way I’m doing the snaps will still result in them being hidden when the mask is on, but you will see them at the base of the neck when the mask is off, which I’m fine with. Let me know how it goes for you too!

Hey Mike, wanted to loop back on this thread. I’m nearly done with my suit and am overall pretty pleased with how the snaps worked for attaching my mask. It results in my not being able to look really far down (I think the back snaps were placed a little off) but it results in a pretty seamless look. I think next time I do a suit, I will get the mask attached but have the zipper on the back of the mask so I can still take it off but it still look really seamless when it’s all zipped up.

So I just got my costume today and everything fit great. My issue is that the mask does have a zipper but the neck part is long and when I move around, the bottom of the neck for the mask likes to ride up a lot in which makes it look weird. I was thinking of doing the buttons but not sure which ones to get. Planned on buttoning the neck of the mask to a shirt that will be worn under the suit instead of it being buttoned to the suit.

Does your mask have the elastic band at the bottom in addition to the zipper? That’s how mine came which I was annoyed by because I didn’t want elastic too. I ended up cutting off that part and hemmed it so that it wouldn’t bunch up and it also was the length I wanted, stopping just above the base of my neck. I didn’t do a perfect job because I don’t have a ton of experience seeing stretchy fabric but it looks okay.

These are basically the buttons I got:

I’m not quite sure what you mean by your idea to button to the shirt… have a picture to show what it currently looks like?

I'll have to take some photos when I get home but my mask doesn't have the elastic at the bottom. What I mean by buttons onto a shirt is I planned on taking a athletic shirt that will be worn under the main suit and have female snap buttons attached to it and then I would attach the male snap buttons on the neck part of the mask, so when I put the mask on, I could just snap the buttons so that the neck part of the mask won't rise up.

Photos of reference to what I'm talking about

Sorry I should add after trying it on again. I think they wanted me to wear the mask and have the neck part drape over the suit but to me that looks weird depending on how I stand. I could add buttons to the suit and the neck of the mask for them snap together so the web lines match but I also don't want to mess with the suit

Okay I see what you mean now... I think what you plan to do would work well with keeping the mask from rising up. I can understand not wanting to attach anything to the suit. I personally like how it looks when the mask comes over the neck of the suit instead of the other way around, but it seems like the main priority is juts keeping the mask from moving around and coming up. Hope it goes well! I'd just be really thorough when sewing the snaps on.

Thanks for the follow-up! Looks good! Someday I'll get around to sewing some buttons in.

Update:

Did the snap buttons and so far I'm enjoying this route with attaching the mask to the suit. Pretty easy to do and straight forward
