I'm a lurker here (this is my 2nd replica prop), and I truly appreciate all of the great ideas and amazing artistry on display here every day. This project is more modest, but hopefully some will find this useful...
My father-in-law is recovering from surgery and is a big NCIS fan. As a get-well gift, I knocked together a "Bert the Farting Hippo." (For those not in the know, Bert is a stuffed animal owned by Abby. He's appeared in around a dozen episodes.)
I didn't have time to track down the same stuffed animal/puppet that was used on as the original prop (and my father-in-law wouldn't have cared anyway), so I was happy with a pretty close cousin. The giant plush hippo is from IKEA ($20), and the self-inflating whoopee cushion was purchased at a local toy shop ($4). The other parts were from around the house.
This was pretty easy to put together, once I figured out how to make the whoopee cushion work inside the stuffed hippo. I ended up having to encase the cushion inside of cardboard bellows (a.k.a. the fart box).
Overall, it took about four hours to put together, and most of the time was spent prototyping and tweaking the fart box. It was quick and easy, and the recipient loved the gift.
If you're interested in building something similar, I have a ludicrous amount of information about building the fart box on my personal site.
And, since it really must be seen in action, here's a video (yt).
