Limited Run Nazgul Gauntlets - comfortable for long convention-days

vaderdarth I'm glad that they arrived safely! ...and that you like them, seeing them in person :)

I'm really tired right now..being in the workshop all day...and my brain doesn't feel like getting poetic in a foreign language at the moment...Will write an update tomorrow.
sanctuspiox the short answer: Yes, you can join in. I decided to make parts for 10 pair and if I counted correctly, there is still some room ;-) I will PM you tomorrow, too

hey guys, sorry for the delay.

First an info for those of you, who will get a kit: I will cut the parts roughly to size on the bandsaw and you would then have to sand/trim them down to their shape.

The leather gloves did not yet arrive. I ordered them 2 weeks ago when they were labeled as "on stock". Upon request, they told me that there was an error on their side and the gloves actually weren't on stock, but are ordered from their supplier. :angry

Progress is not very exciting, since it's the same steps over and over again :wacko.
Right now I have only one other project (animatronic stuff..), which allowed me to get myself a CNC-machine. So I'm hopping from CNC to bandsaw to CNC to belt-sander to CNC...
But I should be able to get 1-2 sets ready for assembly over the weekend.

Thanks for the update, mate. The set that was already sent out looks fantastic! Keep up the good work!

Ok, so I had a few mishaps this weekend.
This is NOT what your bandsaw-blade should look like:
CrazyBandsawblade.jpg
I only - so far - have blades which came with the used machine, so I have no idea what this blade had to suffer trough before...

Inserted a different blade (this time I used a metal-blade...well there's metal in there, right? :rolleyes
Worked great, until I tried to cut the fingerplates, which I had mounted to make the second mold for them.
A hint: DON'T CUT HOT GLUE ON THE BANDSAW!! ...at least not with a tiny-teeth-metal-blade.
DontCutHotGlue.jpg
It's kinda obvious when you see the result! (D'oh! :facepalm)
All the teeth were coated in hot-glue and basically glued it also to my "bandsaw-cone"...
...so I removed most of it with a soft wire brush against the direction of cut to hopefully not dull the blade to much.
In an other mishap regarding my tablesaw, I learned that WD40 dissolves Hot-Glue, so I sprayed the blade with it, waited for 30min or so and then cut some wood scraps into smaller scraps to clean the blade a bit more.

And after some time of happy bandsawing:

(they look so innocent :wacko)

Héhé, love to follow all your trail and errors, inventions, etc... ;-). This thread reads like a good "porp-making movie" ;)

Thanks :) ... on the internet you usually get the impression that everybody is just awesome all the time :cool, so I'd like to add a healthy bit of failure to it :lol ..or maybe I've watched to Mythbusters to often!? :facepalm

any updates?

Yes, there has been a package delivered yesterday:
Gloves_delivered01.jpg

BUT ... they only packed ONE pair :facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm:facepalm....pppfffffffffff...........yep, just would have been to good...
The missing ones are already in shipment, though.

The leather of these gloves is a bit sturdier than the others I had before, but of the same thickness. I don't think that it will make a difference, although they might need a bit more "working in" to get more flexible. But that's the nice thing about leather: it is self-adjusting :D

I haven't got much of trimming done, sadly. Mostly because I had to learn how to machine aluminium parts on my CNC for the animatronics project I'm doing. I got that worked out now and will fit in 1-2h/day of trimming.
I only mention the CNC, because, while working with it, I got some Nazgul related ideas, like belt-buckles, blackspeech leather stamps or a nice wall mount for a Sword!??
...but only after I finish the gauntlets!!!!!

!!!!

Hey there!
2 weeks already ... :(

I'm still trimming parts. Maybe not as fast as I would like to, but there is progress.
FingerplatesTrimmedFirstRound.jpg
As an example: this is a batch of fingerplates, which takes me about 30-40min to trim on the belt sander. It's about 2/3 of the necessary plates for 1 pair.
They still need to be trimmed at the front, which I do with an end-mill in my drill press, and drilling the 4 holes per plate.
Trimming the handplates takes about 1,5h for a pair plus drilling holes.

I had a few problems with my shop-vac, which didn't produce enough air flow. After cleaning the filter, disassembling and reassembling the thing 2-3 times I found the problem:
...the tube was clogged! :facepalm
Again: It's obvious when you know it :wacko

I'm close to assembling the next two sets and will keep you updated!

Ok, I absolutely understand! It's been a long time and you still don't have what you payed for and it's well in your right to ask for a refund.

Assuming that I DO make significant progress, it's still unlikely, that I'll finish ALL of your gauntlets before Christmas (meaning in the next 10 days), so I'll go by the order you joined in, which I have as follows:
1) TomVDJ (finished pair) -> ready for shippment before Christmas
2) vaderdarth (finished pair) -> ready for shippment before Christmas
3) Patattack (set) -> ready for shippment January 11th
4) darthwhitey (finished pair) -> ready for shippment January 11th
5) Stivie (set) -> ready for shippment January 11th

I hope that this is OK for all of you.

I know you have been moving forward slowly on these, but you have only delivered 1 finished pair and we have gone way passed the stated times you have here. I kind of assumed kits would have shipped relatively fast as there would have been less labor involved. Do you have a new realistic ETA?

I was wondering too...

The problem is, that I didn't finish laminating all parts necessary for all sets/kits. When the other guy, who I'm doing an extensive project for, complained that I would only work on the gauntlets (legitimately !!), I panicked a bit and stopped laminating. In retrospect, I should have a least laminated 1h a day, or so....

This was the state of which/how many parts I had laminated at that point:
LaminatedPartsState20160125.jpg

The Idea was to work in the order in which you guys got in on the run. To be fair to all of you I will continue with my original plan and primary focus on finishing laminating. (However I have some fingerplates almost ready for sewing onto leather straps, so I might do that in the evenings)
I laminated more parts today and will do the same tomorrow. Then I should have all parts for 2 sets and 2 kits (if there aren't any catastrophic air bubbles.. )

Tomorrow I can also re-check if I have all other things ready which are part of the kits (which should be the case, since I got the supplies for them in January) Patattack , Stivie : Please give me time until Monday evening to confirm that the two kits are complete and ready for shipment.

Thank you very much for the update! I don't want you to rush too fast and have issues, just looking for a reliable completion time.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as we get regular updates here, I'm fine with waiting on these. Better have a quality replica in the end, than a rushed up item of less quality...

I don't intend to rush through this, I'm just trying to get more done on each day consistently and for the last week or two that worked out good.

The parts for the kits and two finished pair are all there and in various stages of processing.
This is what will be come with the kit:
KitParts.jpg
namely:
Armguards (2 for each arm)
Fingerplates (1-2 extra in case you mess some up ;-) )
Thumb plates (1 for each hand)
Handplates (6 for each hand, labeled L0-5, R0-5)
Hinges for armguards (1 for each)
4 Buckles + Leather straps
more leather straps for fingers and others
templates for leather straps (I just scanned those. They will be on printed paper)
Rivet heads
7mm rivets
9mm rivets
washers
some screws for temporary fixing plates together (this could help for finding the right place for the holes to be punched in the gloves. I will also give you a template for that, but sometimes it's better to place the partly assembled plates on your arm and marking the holes yourself...)
1 pair of black leather gloves
A small quantity of iron powder, in case I missed some air bubbles and you have to fix them (works fine with superglue)

I have checked most parts for air bubbles and have fixed them up with resin-ironpowder-mix. In some cases this did cover up the markings for the holes and slots, but I'll probably drill them out for you, because their placement is essential for the function of the gauntlets.

Well, today I made all the hinges for all sets/pairs. Cutting on the bandsaw with a metal blade is quite a joy in comparison to manually cutting them with a hacksaw :D
Also i made use of my newest flee-market catch: A grinding wheel in combination with a quickly made jig works faster and makes more precise rounded edges :$

About the shipping date for the kits:
I want to get them ready for shipment this week, but am not sure if I'll be able to actually ship them before Easter, or after.
Will PM you soon about the remaining deposits and shipping costs.

I'm not in any big hurry! Take your time to get things right, no need to rush. Next couple of weeks is more than fine!
