Narnia - chainmail, any SCA guys out there?

Has anyone done the research on how to recreate Peter's armor from Narnia?
I would like to buy the chainmail and make the rest.
From narnia web;
Under the tabard, Peter wears a long-sleeved mail coat laced up the front with leather lacings. The hooded coif comes to a point in the front. The shirt and coif have three rows of gold links on the outer edges. He also has leggings of chain mail,

It's standard 4 in 1, and the rings appear to be slightly flattened. It doesn't appear to be riveted (which is much to your benefit, for the sake of both cost and sanity if you're making it yourself). You shouldn't have much trouble finding the coif or hauberk, although you may need someone to make it to order if you can't find either item with the correct gold trim, number of rows, etc.

If you need assistance on knitting mail this can be a good resource:

Here is just one place to get links from that we've dealt with in the past:

There are a tonne of other resources for knitting and ring suppliers out there but I don't want to innundate you. If you do want more I can supply you with more and there are a great many here that probably have other resources that will be excellent.

Rats, now I want a set even more!!!

Hi Joseph,

Thank you for your email and interest in our chainmaille.

We are only supplying chainmaille for film industry productions at the moment, and do not have any pricing or product structures in place.

However, we will be launching chainmaille sales to the public at some point in the future.

I will keep your email on file, and notify you when we launch.

Kind regards,
Darren

Well it has been two years that I have been waiting for Narnia Chainmail.

I think they forgot about me. Has anyone found a good source for mass produced Chainmail?

We worked on the VFX of Narnia, and had a lot of the props and costumes here to digitize/texture map for our CG work. The mail suits were amazing. I'm not really into this stuff, but I recognize quality work when I see it. Far as I could tell, the rings WETA Workshop made were made out of some sort of metal colored (or technically, coloured) ABS and were glued together. The full suit was heavy, but nowhere near the weight if they had used metal. And even in person, the suits looked like metal. Somewhere, down behind a desk or a bookcase, I have a little swatch of the raw material they used. We used it as a reference to see how the stuff bends and moves.

And before you ask, yup, we returned everything to Disney.

If someone wanted to come up with injection molded rings I bet there'd be a huge market for costumers. I know I'd be one of them.

I've worked on and fought in metal maille before and would love the light weight 'plastic' maille for costuming. I used aluminum once thinking it would do, and while the weight was much lighter than steel, aluminum has a very nasty habit of getting everything it comes into contact with very very dirty.

Seriously, if someone could figure out a way to mass produce slightly flexable chain maille rings like Weta's Narnia, LOTR, and Kingdom of Heaven maille, I would buy them by the thousands. A good long sleve hauberk to the knee and integrated coif w/ventail runs about 30K rings depending on the dimensions of the individual metal ring. But it could weight up to 50 lbs.

There are a couple of regular chain malle suppliers on eBay that you could use. I recommend that if you plan on using it for costuming and not stopping real sharp pointy things go for an aluminum hauberk and not a steel one. I own a galvanized steel hauberk that covers 3/4 of the way down my arms and half way to my knees. It weighs 38 pounds. The same hauberk in aluminum would weigh 6-8 pounds total.

If you want to make your own and have access to a table saw you can always cut 1/2" diameter PVC tube into rings and fit them together. It won't look perfect but it'll also only weigh 2 or 3 pounds total when done.

Wasn't there a documentary on one of the LotR extras discs that detailed their chain mail?

Didn't realize this thread was two years old......

I dug out the sample I have (it's my only souvenir from "Narnia." Well, besides the ulcer.....)

Like I said, it looks like they used ABS (though it could be styrene). This is a plain sample, the real stuff appeared to have metal pigment in the plastic (not painted). As you can see, it conforms great.

That stuff makes a very good looking fake, even fairly close up. They color matched it nicely to properly patinaed steel or iron mail...malle...maile...maille...armor.

Actually, it's just plain, gray ABS - no paint or dye.

The actual production used mail did use steel colored plastic and was amazing, even in bright light and to the naked eye.

Gene

PS - Thanks to this thread, I've been playing with this stuff as I do my work......

Try PMing Utinni. I recall him duin a set of PVC mail and posting a step by step of his process back when LOTR was first being filmed. From what I remember everything he purchased was at the Hardware store. It looked REAL good when he was finished too.

I got a real good look at the Weta mail while visiting some friends there. The links are styrene - and they are injected on a tree just like a model kit. From what I gathered, they have a partnership with a company in China and they do most of the "knitting" there. The finish on the links ranges from rusted iron to actual chrome (the chrome links are a LOT heaver, and they have a nice metallic sound).

On a side note - I was shocked to see these the other day:

Amazing that they offer it in a riveted style! And it won't rust!

Yep. The think geek is exactly what i am looking for. I had my Step Mother in Law crochet me a tunic out of nylon cord. Once I painted it black and silver, it looks real at 20ft.

I think it was one of the guys from High Impact that did the PVC maile, but it was bigger diameter rings for the Orc maile. BUT if you're interested in Samurai armor plates, I'm working on some resin cast plates for costumes for myself and a friend.
