hey guys, been on here a week or so and thought i'd best say gudday :) i'm from new zealand, where there isn't a HUGE costume following or availability, so i'm glad i've found you guys to help me out with making some of my own gear!

firstly a quick bit about me..i'm a big fan of batman and iron man and most other comic heroes and such, love action movies, and a transformers geek from way back. huge on motorbikes (i rebuild them in my spare time) so if you've got any motorcycle questions i'd be happy to help. i did a course in special effects a few years back through a cut above in auckland, studying under a guy whose name escapes me but was credited as an SFX artist on anaconda (and many other things), was trying to break into the industry but its fairly hard here! erm..yeh. thats probably all i can think of for now.

anyway to the questions.. i have a party to go to in november, themed 'what you want to be when you grew up'. i'm wanting to make a batman costume on the cheap. i have camping mats and access to vinyl, sewing machines etc, i'm a fairly adept sculptor and whatnot..just pretty much wanting to know, what kind of glue should i use to stick the mats together? generic terms please, i may not be able to get what you guys get in the US etc.

i can get hold of a fairly cheap latex mask so that wouldn't be a problem.

also painting, whats the best stuff to use? and i am on a limited budget.

any help would be greatly appreciated :) cheers

35 views and not a single hello? ;-) c'mon guys, thought this was a friendly place! Perhaps I'll post up some pics when I get to a proper computer and you can get an idea of what I do.

i just use hot glue. but i dont use camping pads either..sooo....

good luck and welcome!

did a bit of research and seems hot glue it the easiest option to work with. nice! cheers guys, i'll keep you informed how it goes..

Gidday! There's a few others here in New Zealand. Nice to have another on board. This is a really nice place - folks are very helpful and super knowledgeable. Good luck with the costume. Cheers, Phil

Welcome aboard!

I think you'll find a lot more folks from NZ and Oz here than you might have imagined. You shouldn't have much trouble getting tips on locally available (and locally named/branded) materials. Our "international population" has grown immensely over the last few years. :)

I've never personally worked with camping mats, but here are a few fantastic costume threads to get your wheels turning:

IRON MAN MARK III (Polyethylene mats)
IRON MAN MARK I (My Version)
Mass Effect 2 N7 Armor Builds

Best of luck, and keep us posted on your progress!
