Myers Halloween Mask replica

I'm a big John Carpenter fan and thought that I should finally pick up a Michael Myers Mask but have quickly noticed that there are a million makers of the thing with some makers charging pretty wild prices.

The little research I've done has shone that the horror mask community is a large and strange beast with bunches of weird habits, politics, history and tastes not found over here in RPF territory. A bit confusing overall.

The orignal 1978 Halloween mask was built from a Don post Captain Kirk mask. The eyes were cut out, the sideburns were removed and the face painted white. That's about the extent of my knowledge.

Can somebody give me a run down of whats going on in Halloween mask replica scene?

I feel that the "Psycho" by Justin Mabry at Nightowl Productions is the most accurate H1 you can get. This is one I used to own:

And I've seen better copies than this one!

I agree - Justin's "Psycho" is one of the better H1 masks.

I think NAG's H1 mask is damn near perfect.

Cemetary Gate Production's "Warlock" is about the best H2 mask you'll find (in case your into that look).

3 things needed:
which movie you want?
do you have a set budget?
how important in SA to you?

there are so many great Shape mask available and depending on what you're looking for you could spend you're life and life's savings in pursuit of the perfect Mask.

i've got three masks:
a Samhain, which looks very close to the H4 box art.

a Split Tiberius, basically a Before-and-after mask

and a blank Nemesis, which i don't have a picture of and is currently over a hundred miles away. i've seen great H1 and H2 masks from a Nemesis depending on who finished it.

I have not looked in a couple of years, but I agree with the assessment that Psycho and Warlock are the best H1 and H2 masks available, respectively. (I have a Psycho.)

The Myers mask road has always been one paved in land mines. Very true, the mask world is a different kinda animal for sure, I've been a part of it for a LONG time, it is very much night and day between it and the prop world here, I can carry much less ammo here ;) Myers fans are as touchy as anything I've seen, and usually asking which mask is best, is like asking which Vader helmet is most accurate ;)
Paracord is exactly right, it comes down to personal preferance, what you like more, and what mask makes you grin and think of Mikey. It looks like you're after an H1 mask from the pics you posted, so you have a few different options. Psycho is gonna be the one that comes up the most, it came out a while after the great Myers war died down, and was accepted as pretty much the gold standard of post war masks, also for the fact it is DEAD on. If accuracy is your goal above all else, go for the Psycho. I owned one, and it was incredable, I opted to sell only because I wanted an H2 mask. Price wise, it's a lot for a white mask with brown hair, no matter what you end up with, but being such a simple mask in design, any innacuracies stand out like a sore thumb, and of course, supply and demand market.

On a sideish note, the original was the DP Kirk mask, eyes cut wider, side burns pulled off, the hair sprayed darker, and the mask spray painted white *cringes* the oil in spray paint will break down latex on a molecular level and turn it into a puddle of sticky goo after a few years. So anyone reading this DO NOT spray paint a mask!! ;)

listen to this man about the spray paint; he speaks the truth. though it's probably more than a few years. the H1 hero held up well enough to make it into H2 and IIRC it was stuffed in a box under a desk in between.
if you decide you want to do your own conversion, several makers also offer Kirks(replicas). don't bother looking for an original; any genuine Kirk would either be nearly in pieces or worth it's volume in gold(yes, i said VOLUME, not weight). forget Apple stock, i'm taking my time machine to get mint Kirk masks and make a cast of the H1 hero. Bill gates ain't got nuthin on that holy grail.

Here was my mask that I had Nick Castle (a friend of a friend) wear and sign for me when I went to his house for dinner.

I'm definately trying to hit an original "John Carpenter's Halloween" or H1 as it seems to be refered to in the mask community. I'm all about the original. All others are just wannabe's. Carpenter even regrets making the first sequel. :)

The copious amounts of jargon and abbreviations make reading the dedicated mask forums difficult and overwhelming. Hopefully this thread may become a good informative newbie discussion that lays this stuff out clearly RPF style.

First off, I'm really curious about the Myers War that I keep getting whiffs of. What's the deal there?

Also, just how crazy rare are the original Kirk masks? Is it like the horror fan version of OB1 Saber parts?

Here's a dud that paid over 2,000 bucks for an original. How many originals are in fan hands or do they usually self destruct due to the passage of time?

Hope you don't mind my jumping in here, you are right in thats its quite difficult to know what to get in terms of accuracy/price etc, I got stung with my first Myers mask, it was an eBay special and turned out to be WAY undersize! I then did a little homework and picked up this bad bot pictured below, I am still not 100% sure of its origins but for me it really captures the look I wanted, on a side note does anyone have a good source for accurate coveralls for a display mannequin? Good luck with your search :thumbsup

Alot of the myers masks are all about perception. I've owned probably 10 Myers masks, from all different makers. They take a good picture at the right angle and you say "wow it looks exacly like it" then you get it and go Oh not that great.
But some look really good. Justin Mabry's mask are great. Sam Mccains look pefect at certain angles. I think the NAG masks look really good, but have never seen one in person.

does anyone have a good source for accurate coveralls for a display mannequin?

i'd first try places that sell work clothes. check out PC Penny for Big Mac coveralls. i believe Big Mac and Redcap coveralls are generally accepted as accurate, but like everything else, if you start going into SA it's another huge can of worms. Some say the H2 coveralls had stripes. :confused
and just in case it comes up, the boots are military style jungle boots. you can usually find at least one pair at surplus stores.

kinda, yeah. really good ones would belong to Trekkies, and IMO that's where they should stay because of the rarity. They're not really masks anymore so much as collectors items. if I found an original in good condition I sure as heck wouldn't have it converted. i'd have it stuffed, maybe cast, and either display it with my Myers masks or auction it at a ST convention where it would be appreciated for what it is. of course i'd take a thousand pictures and gloat about it at MMN as well. :cool
i don't know how they hold up typically, but i'm sure they'd rot away to nothing like everything else if not cared for.
