My Version of the Master Chief

After reading thorssoli's thread on his Master Chief helm and armor I decided to give it a try. I followed thorssoli's link to 405th.com and read about Pepakura, a program that takes digital data of items and converts the data to flat pieces that can then be printed out on a home printer and then glued together to form the 3d object.

So, I printed out the Master Chief helm and started cutting and folding. Alot like making paper dolls. :lol

Please forgive the crappy pics. Here is the helm after coating the completed paper helm with resin on the outside and fiberglassing the inside.

The next three pics are of the helm now that I've bondoed, sanded, sanded sanded and sanded then primered.

Now I need to get my visors so that I can fit those then I can complete the painting and then add the LED's. I'll finish up the helmet liner while I wait on the visors. Hopefully it won't be too long before I finish this project.

This is the first time I've attempted anything like this. What are your opinions? Should I complete the armor as well or end the agony here. :lol

Very impressive. Don't stop there, do the whole suit. I wonder what else you could make with that program. Looks like your on the right path. Keep us updated with your progress.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I'll keep this updated as I finish the helm.

What did you user for the interior padding? It looks impressive.

The liner is from an unused off road helmet. The liner is removable for cleaning so removing it was a no-brainer. The liner fits around a dense foam skull cap of sorts that's glued into the off road helmet. I can't get that part out so I've got to sort out a replacement. The liner is in three sections and the ear parts that come down by the chin are snapped in so I've got to find a way to secure a snap on each side. It's all part of the fun though.

:eekVery nice job! Looks like you took your time to make it real clean. Bet that program helped with putting together something with so much technical symetry. If you got one for the rest you should deffinately do it.

Now you know what would be really cool? If somebody could use your helmet as a base to make a real functioning/safe Master Chief motorcycle helmet. I'd buy it.

That looks spectacular! I just downloaded the program and can't decide which helmet I want to build. What did you use for the black hose on the side of the helmet?

go 405th!

Looks good. Could use more definition on the edges in some spots. I'd love to see something other than split loom for the cheek vents. Perhaps plumbing hoses in the mold.

Looks good.

Thanks MjolnirArmor, If it wasn't for you and others like thorssoli over at www.405.com I wouldn't have been inspired to do this project. On a lark I read about Pepakura on a Thursday night, downloaded the program and after buying cardstock Friday morning I started printing out the low res helm. By Saturday morning I had a helmet sitting on the mantle. It was too large but I was satisfied. After staring at it for a week while reading more on the 405.com I decided to go for a hi res helm and if it turned out OK then go on to finish it. This one scaled better and was perfect for this kind of project. Interested folks should check out www.mjolnirarmor.com/ and the 405th's site.

I agree on the wire loom for the tubes but it's all I could find as the building supply places didn't carry any appropriate hoses. It looks a tad small so I will probably cut some plastic disk to hot glue into the loom to expand it's diameter some. As for some edges needing more definition, I agree. I wimped out on some of the top/rear detailing. Oh well, it's only in primer right now and I've got bondo so I may go back and build those areas up. Also I may go back and cut in some more panel lines as well. Just depends on my patience.:lol

RussellSculpts - Yeah, the Pepakura is one of the main keys to this. I don't have the patience to free sculpt. Some folks will slather the helmet in bondo and then start sanding but I put many small coats on slowly, over the course of a week, sanding each coat down before adding more bondo. This allowed me to keep the details that the Pepakura file provided.

Risu - I've got a motorcycle and thought the same thing, I'm surprised that the off-road crowd hasn't jumped all over this. Guess Microsoft/Bungie want too much for a license.
