My Transforming Bumblebee Costume

Kessa , thank you for you interest. At first I hoped to have working wheels, but the weight will be a killer...I hope to be able to wear BB for at lest 4 hours without crying, and many places will not offer the chance to "roll around". The moter was not a problem, but batt. and wheels were. I have not been inactive, I have found a good replacement for the string used for the fingers...thicker string. all the cables and wire I found were to inflexible. I have now built most of the remaining leg's skeleton and am down to cable length and springs. Here are some updated photos. If any of you have recommendations or questions please fire away.Extreme Costumes's Photos - BumbleTron | Facebook

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Hmmm, it would be cool to have working wheels, but then again, something light (like inflatable wheels) would just look naff in comparison to the rest of the build. I wonder if you could get some kind of dense foam which would be dense enough to take your weight, yet light, even if hey don't move.

Another thought - are you planning on having any sounds as you transform?
If you haven't thought about that aspect yet then I know a couple of the guys who do C3P0 use small sensors in key places (in their shoes, fingers, etc) to do the servo sounds - manybe something similar would work for Bee?

Keep the pics and vids coming - this is going to be a stunning thing when it's finished by the looks of it :)

Wow, when I first saw this thread I was skeptical, but I can see it's for real! I just watched the leg video, pretty neat.
As far as the moving wheels question, I suppose you could use fake wheels but with small rollerskate or caster type wheels on the bottoms of the fake ones (maybe also on your knees & elbows to help distribute weight) so that when you transformed, you could actually roll around. But like you said, there may not be any place to roll where you wear it. Plus, someone might think it's funny to roll you down a hill!

dude man

i think i just came....damn thats a nice project u got going there my friend...please keep us posted....

If the wheels work, I must support them far more than now, and they are on a moving platform....so no chance. I can spread my 300 pounds out over a good area and not have to build in extra supports for the narrow area of the tires. After FAR more work than it should have been, I have now finished both leg skeletons. I need only minor improvements to start with the outside robot shell on the legs. I have found a good replacement for the ligaments on the arms, but now have to rebuild the springs for a stronger pull(thicker string=need stronger springs, just 32 to go :)Extreme Costumes's Photos - BumbleTron | Facebook

Instead of string for the finger pulley mech have you looked into beading wire? It is fairly strong yet extremely thin. I don't know what type of tension you will have on the fingers but try it out. It may work and be your solution.

Watching this very carefully! Awesome start!

What is beading wire?, can it take 90* turn and be flexible? and wehe do I find it? Thanks for the input :)

next video is shooting on Thursday. Lots of progress, but I'm not sure how well it will show on video, restrung all fingers with new string. Reset many springs, installed 2 new sillystring guns(works more reliably). Built second leg skeleton. So I guess that's progress, should post new video on fri-sat...editing is a new game for me and I need help :)

Hi all, got some real progress on the torso, and tried all the parts on at once. Here are some update photos. I will have a new video posted by Saturday morning.
