My Star Wars Bandais ( all scales ;) )

Hello there

I used to hang around here for quite some time, and now I felt the need to finally register a account.
Let me introduce first.
I am 42 years old ( yap I am old :) ) and I am located in Austria/Europe. I do modelbuildung since my teens and I am hooked to Star Wars since age of 5 or 6. Just recently, mid Nov last year I introduced myself to the Bandai kits, and man, in all those years I have never seen anything awesome like them. I used to have all the MPC/Ertl kits back then, but compared to the Bandais, they look like toys ships now, not to speak of the recent Revell kits.
Since I am a little resticted of space due some other collections ( scaled replicas, selected figures, etc. ) and of course my wife :) I focus on the 1:72 of Bandai as I think they are the perfect size. Not to small, not to big. I just hope they will continue that scale for quite some time and hopefully re-released some kits too, A 72 Falcon, Slave I and U-Wing would be awesome, also wouldn´t mind a set of Snowspeeders or the AT-ST done in 72.

I also hope they come up with a set of extra Death Star surface tiles sometime :) :)

Here a few pics of the kits I´ve done since Nov.

A-Wing Fighter:
my introduction kit, the extra Death Star turret did it :)

TIE Interceptor:
barely noticeable, I did a blueiish layer of drybrush

X-Wing Fighter:
I am sooo tempted to pick up another pair, to do both Wedge and Biggs fighter as well

First Order TIE Fighter:
20170106_220230.jpg20170106_220243.jpg20170106_220259.jpg

I have the OT TIE in waiting line, as well as the Y-Wing, Vaders TIE and Resistance X-Wing somewhere in the mail :)
I might get starting the figures too, especially the droids, maybe the Scout Tooper with Speeder Bike too

As for my painting, I don´t use anything special. I use standard, nonamed, waterbased flat acryls from the hobbystore around the corner. Everything is painted by hand with old school brushes. I do not use cans or airbrush, no "special" weathering sets or oils. And I am not exactly a friend of decals, so everything on the X-Wing is painted,

ATTENTION !!
Feel free to post any kind of feedback, pro or contra or what else, but keep photos of YOUR items out of MY showroom ;) THX

Re: My 1:72 Star Wars Bandais

Hi,
great work! I love the Bandai kits and had a lot by myself which waiting to build but in the moment I buld on some props. And hey 42 years old,I am 52 years young:lol

Re: My 1:72 Star Wars Bandais

Looking good Real Scooby. I've just started on the 1:72 train with a Bandai x wing (and some revell stuff that needs more work than I'm capable of to look anywhere decent)
And yes I'm in that over 40's club

Re: My 1:72 Star Wars Bandais

40+ club here.

Went to Japan for work last year and after visiting a couple hobby stores in Tokyo, I got the itch. Thinking that I will be building all of Bandai 1/72 kits and a few others.

Finished a few kits already. Need to start my own display thread!

Scoob, does the A-Wing kit come with 2 different Death Star tiles?

I think the DS tiles are a great addition to these kits. Wish FM sold a box of 20 tiles, I'd buy several boxes!

Well, if you consider the turret as tile, then yes :)
I too thing the tiles are a awesome addition, thats why I think Bandai should offer a set of 12 to 15 tiles on their own. They could throw in a punch of 90° connector and we could build a awesome trench display :) :)

Y-Wing finished

This was an awesome kit to build with all those tiny greeblies and pipes. Thats what I love in modelbuilding

Had a little setback when I installed the long struts, all 8 where pretty warped still in their sprues.
Painting was also a fun job, although it turned out a little darker then I wanted, but I do like it that way

Re: My 1:72 Star Wars Bandais

Next one finished, Poe Dameron´s X-Wing :)

As I am not a friend of using decals/stickers, I had to paint the orange parts on the black wings, which turned out to be pretty troublesome :p
But the weathering covered that and everythings, fine. I didn´t find enough reference pics, like I used for Luke´s ride, so the chipping is my artistic freedom. Also, I didn´t like the silver on the back end part and the droid socket, so I darkend these areas.

Next on schedule:

Boba´s Slave I

or a custom TIE ;)

Re: My 1:72 Star Wars Bandais

Since I am currently running out on .72 kits, I started into the other scales already too :) ( Is there a way to rename the threat ? )
Heres my first .144 kit, Boba Fett´s Slave One

20170507_192413.jpg20170507_192615.jpg20170507_192206.jpg20170507_192450.jpg20170507_192541.jpg20170507_192431.jpg20170507_1925091.jpg

Had to paint it twice since I didn´t like how the first try turned out. And I realized I was all wrong for the past 30+ years. Until now I ALWAYS believed that the round wing houses are colored dark grey instead of dark green :) I disassembled most of it and let the parts soak over night in water. Since I am using waterbased acryls, the color came of pretty easy next morning :) Unfortunatly during disassembling I broke one of the pegs from the struts to the moving wingjoint. So I decited to permanently glue the wings in flight position.

Next up on schedule, either the Resistance X-Wing, TFA Falcon or U-Wing. Whatever arrives first :)

Re: My 1:72 Star Wars Bandais

My latest addition to my Bandai kit shelves

1/2 BB-8

Everything spread out on my "work bench". ( Mrs. Scooby was not very amused to cover the full dinning table sized 1 x 2 meters :p )

20170513_155509.jpg

Main section finished, Although all Bandai´s are ment to be be snap-kits, I still use glue, just for safety

20170515_192633.jpg

Tools arms and drawer painted

20170514_062059.jpg20170514_062060.jpg

Body and Head assembled and blackwashed

20170517_185614.jpg20170517_185749.jpg

Final weathering and finished :)

20170525_064928.jpg20170525_065015.jpg20170525_065108.jpg20170525_065252.jpg20170525_065417.jpg20170525_065514.jpg20170525_065623.jpg20170525_065719.jpg

I still need to install the LED unit to the eye, just haven´t found fitting batteries yet.
As I never planed to install any additional LED´s ( and I have ZERO knowledge of electrical stuff :p ) I touched up all the clear parts with a drop of blue or red to bring out the lights a little. Just not very visible in the photos.
Also I decited to not use the white body panels with the big pegs. They are ment to be installed on top to hold the head, and on bottom to fit into the stands. But this leaves you pretty limited with posing. Although it would look ok with the armpit, the drawer would end up in a pretty weird position.
Anyway I installed the panels wit no pegs ( you need 8 panels total, to cover everything, but you get delivered 11 ) and now I can pose him in any position I want. My only limit is.... well, gravity :) :) :)

Other than on my vehicle kits, I did NOT completly repaint him. The blackwash was done right on the plastic. I read in another build-thread about minor visible deformations due molting process. They are there, but due weathering, no longer noticeable.
The final weathering was done by dry-brush-stibbing with just two tones of brown, bambi-brown and dark-brown. Scratches were added by carefully rolling the ball when still sitting in the stand, so they are kind of "natural"

After all, this was a pretty satisfying kit to build and paint, and a welcomed alternate to my vehicles. I only wish Bandai would come up with more 1:2 droids now. I really don´t want to pay another fortune for DeAgo´s R2 when I finish their Falcon around Dec.
Would love to get a 1;2 R2-D2 with all sort of his extensions, Double the price of BB would be still ok for me.
I also wouldn´t mind a 1:2 Pit-Droid, Mouse Droid ( I know, this even could end up 1:1, but I´d prefer 1:2 to fit the theme )

Great job on them all! I just finished my Y wing and man those pipes were a pain!!! Definitely the toughest one to build.

Re: My 1:72 Star Wars Bandais

Another addition to my growing vehicle collection ;)

02.jpg03.jpg20170612_204855.jpg20170612_204917.jpg20170612_204942.jpg20170612_205106.jpg20170612_205232.jpg20170612_205250.jpg

Didn´t bother about the stand on this one, its just temporary. I want to try my luck with a custom "Lake Low Approach" including the water spray tail. Cant help myself, but I think this scene is just.... epic :) :)

Re: My 1:72 Star Wars Bandais

started working on my custom "Lake Low Aproach" base for the Resistance X-Wing.

20170617_070707.jpg

I used a spare 20x30 cm picture frame I found at the basement. I removed the glass and painted the inlay with various shades of blue and green. Used colors are "Sapphire Blue", "Cobalt Blue", "Black Forrest Green", "Olive Green" and a few white mixed shades. I tried to get a look of speedlines.
For the water surface I used "Transparent Water Drops" by NOCH ( a modeltrain supplier ), molted in the microwave and filled into the frame. At first I was a little bummed by those tiny bubbles, but I think they give a nice look. With Mrs. Scooby's hairdryer :) I blewed in a few waves and unevened the surface.
The clear mounting pole comes from one of DeAgo's SW Vehicle models. Its just the right height to levitate the X-Wing to a reeeeeeally badass low level.

I will start building the spraytail using cotton later today
