My Stab at The Evil Dead Chainsaw (Finished!)

Hey guys and gals. just showing off my build of Ash's chainsaw hand from the evil dead/army of darkness films. Any comments or tips are always welcome!
And if anyone has a good faux gunky grease recipe I'd love to hear it!

It all started with a dirty old chainsaw from Ebay...
MyBn6qw.jpgYqUphW2.jpg

Add in a sweet custom Grill from evildeadchainsaws.com
8eiHb3X.jpg

And a few hours of degreasing, cutting and breathing toxic fumes later
i01rmgY.jpg0isTRYQ.jpgEM79d2J.jpg

Clearly it's still in its early stages but im pretty happy with how smoothly its been coming along.
Next is to tackle the top handle and wrist bracket. Then the head scratcher on how to mount the blade
Thanks for Looking!

Re: My Stab at The Evil Dead Chainsaw (WIP)

When I built mine I split the engine in half lengthwise. This left the original bar mount in tact. I then bolted the original sprocket back in place.

I also left 2 of the original mounting holes (top and bottom where the motor fastens through the case) to use to install the split engine into the case. I used the other 2 holes (again, one top one bottom) as a means for attaching the handle inside. Took allot of grinding, but it was well worth it, and the thing is rock solid!

As for the grease/oil, I mixed saw dust and wood chips into some black oil paint and painted it onto the saw, taking into account where it would all collect in a real world setting. I have tons of pics I'm willing to share if you're interested, but don't want to hijack your thread with them.

So far so good, keep it up!!!

That's the step I'm at with my build at the moment. I'd welcome some tips also.

Wow I feel like a moron. I haven't even looked at the engine since i dismantled the saw. I was planning on fabricated something out of plastic or steel, this seems like a much more straightforward approach Thanks A Ton!

And feel free to post anything you want Brian, I'd like this thread to be more of a discussion than just me showing off! :) This is my first prop so I'll take any techniques i can!

Re: My Stab at The Evil Dead Chainsaw (WIP)

I scratched my head on the bar mount for a long time on the first one I did. I started grinding away at the engine and it just sort of sorted itself out. I was also able to source a relatively accurate clamp from a local hydraulics company, and am more than willing to help you out with that if you (or anyone else) need it. I searched for the side 'grill' piece with no luck, so milled my own, molded it, and am now able to cold cast them in aluminum when I need them. Thought I'd post a quick pic of the addition one of my saws just got...

In case you're wondering, that's Bruce's signature. Needless to say, I'm grinning from ear to ear!!!

Wow, my jealousy is overflowing at that signature! I found the wrist clamp as well but sorting out a nice cuff to go inside is another issue. I considered using an old painted pop bottle. Any suggestions?

When my son used mine for his Ash costume at a local convention I used some black craft foam inside the clamp. Now it has a strip of metal that's fastened with the bolts that go through the clamp. You could also use a wide strip of leather.

Mini Update
I ended up using an old plastic container to make the cuff inserts and used some Krylon Weathered Steel on it. Looks not too bad. I think the colour is a tad dark though and may end up changing it.

Ho.Lee.Cow Brian was not kidding when he said how much grinding this would take! would every minute though!

Pre Fallout 4 Update

The Top Handle has been bent and fitted along with the engine/muffler plate!
TXfRNsk.jpgvxeukmW.jpg
The bar took literal hours to peel all the paint off, but seeing that shine was worth every minute!

Just need to go about splitting a dowel safely!

Now if you excuse me I'm off to wastelands for a few days!

Re: My Stab at The Evil Dead Chainsaw (WIP)

Getting closer! I discovered that a good paint stripper takes the paint right off with little effort. I also decided to leave some paint on mine to give it a more "used for it's actual purpose" look, but I do like the shiny bar. I've been studying the saw from 'Ash vs Evil Dead' and discovered some very slight differences from the original cabin version. Guess it's time to put one of those together, cause you gotta have em all! Keep it up!

And here it hangs until I meet the Big Man again to get it signed thanks for following along and stay groooovy!

Looking great man! All you need now is a deadite and a necronomicon!

I finished my build on Halloween. Had to take the safe route of a wooden bar and bicycle chain for Halloween. Would love to find someone to mold the chainsaw bar and get a resin cast of the bar, and a silicone cast of the chain.

Awesome man, that turned out great, and he clamp looks excellent! ;) Time to get that thing signed!!!

I've found a great paint stripper is EZ OFF. The real stuff, not the dollar store brand. Spray it on thick then recoat twenty minutes later and then wipe off. This will work on bare paint. If it's powder coated or sealed, I'm not sure.

I used some "Industrial" paint remover and It got the majority of it off, but there were these small spots the just wouldn't let up! I'll eventually swap out the 18" bar for a 20" and I'll definitely try it!
