Got the face plate here:

Filled the inside/bottom with bondo to make it stronger, then used 2 coats of primer filler
Next I sanded until smooth, finally I painted with Kryon Stainless Steel spray paint

Theres tons of tube radios on ebay. I buy em all the time. Any small tabletop radio will have a chassis that you can remove and install. I like this project. I modify a lot of radios specifically because of fallout. But only cheap not necessarily desirable ones. I have a few wood and brass faced ones if you ever need pictures of how theyre finished or anything.

I found this radio that looks pretty similar in terms of shape, it's a General Electric, however looks that the exterior is plastic :(, Could have been a good base if it was proper wood! They are quite expensive though!

Its not plastic. Its Bakelite. A mixture of formaldahyde and some other nice things. Originally it had a burl to it that looked like wood. It was an early plastic and a real early attempt at fake wood. Later ones were set in colored bakelite or plastic. The brown bakelite is a 1930s to mid 50s type thing.

The wood ones are harder to come by. I got one for $30 at a garage sale. They are literally just a plywood case with some verneer on them though. 20170406_173940.jpg

Ooh! Thanks! I actually didn't know what Bakelite meant haha! Thought it was just the style of the radios! Pretty cool info! And that wooden radio looks awesome! It looks that it had "waves" on the side though, will you be sanding this down? Or keep it as it is?

It looks slightly too curved actually, I can't believe how hard it is to find a similar wood cabinet haha, looks to be such a common shape for the radios!

I dont plan on altering this one any further. I found a stain close to the color i found inside and restained it. It was a mess when i got it and most of the verneer was peeling. I glued it all mostly back together. A lot of it is cracked, but the radio is 100% functional. Typivally the wax capacitors are junk or about to be junk but not this one, tubes warm up and it plays fine.

I have quite a few bakelite radios and an old uhf/vhf antenna receiver converter. Most of them work. I do have a few that dont, but ive modified and/or painted all of them. I even have a console radio i gutted to turn into a media center for below my projector screen. I mess with old radios quite a bit. My house is full of deco stuff - fans and the like. I was mostly a fan of the artwork in bioshock and fallout as inspiration.

Your collection sounds amazing. I love Art Deco. Particularly of the 50's.
