My P1 Predator Bio Helmet build (lots of pics)

I was looking around over at the predatorium and got inspired by such creative and talented people that it gave me the motivation to attempt my own P1 bio. I started with a pepakura file, which in hindsight it would have probably been easier to scratch build it from clay. I have never sculpted anything before so didn't think I would have had much success with clay. Anyway here are some progress shots of my build. Let me know what you guys think. Would love any feedback as Im always looking to better myself. Note I was trying to be as screen accuracy as possible but with the pepakura base it was tough to make certain changes, so I had to live with certain things.

1) Pepping the helmet. This was the best P1 I was able to find but as you will see, still way off from accurate.


2) The dome was not wide enough so I had to add a piece of card stock to widened it a bit.


3) After coating the outside with resin.


4) Rondo coat on the inside.


5) I sprayed a guide coat of black paint to help highlight the high and low spots when sanding.


6) Used some apoxie sculpt to close the gap between the back fins of the dome. Applied spot putty for minor pinholes and imperfections.


7) Started to smooth out the bondo on the face.



8) Used a piece of tape to help me identify the center when creating the widows peak area.



9) The nose just seemed way too wide for my liking so this was my first attempt to narrow it down a bit.

10) His cheeks looks way too thin for me, almost as if he was starving, ha.



11) Apoxie sculpt to help even it out a bit and make the divots more gradual.


12) Continuing to shape the face with apoxie sculpt (this is where I started to think why didn't I just make this from clay initially)


13) Side provide shot to show the curves of the face. I felt pretty happy at this point.


14) Eyes needed some serious reworking as the pep files were too small.



15) Used a dremel and opened up a hole for the breathing filter thingy (sorry not sure of all the technical names)



16) Cut a piece of styrene as a backing plate.


17) Made a mold of my super glue to help with the breathing filter part.


18) Used apoxie sculpt to make the center piece. I drilled the 3 holes after it hardened.

19) Drilled a hole and used a nut with a built in locking washer.


20) Used a cap from a travel size shaving cream to help with the laser housing. I am a big fan of using things in your environment to help get the shapes you need. Lastly, used my x-acto razor saw to scribed the line onto the housing.



21) Used a pill bottle, some styrene and aluminum to make the details for the laser.


22) Real lasers from china, I got 5 of them for a $1 shipped, crazy.


23) Started with a matte coat of black followed by silver.


24) Cut some PETG and painted it black from one side which gives a high gloss look on the reverse side. Clearly you can see out of it this way but mine will be more of a display piece anyway as its quite heavy as I didn't cast it.

25) This was the part I was dreading as I never weathered anything in my life before and I always leave anything I do at the pristine stage but it never really gives you that real world feel so I decided to just give it a whirl this time and not be scared. I used a combination of a brush, organic sea sponge and my airbrush with various acrylics paints. Not sure I am completely happy with the weathering. Curious to see what others thing and what I can do to improve it or whether it is just me being to over critical of my own work.

thats just beautiful !!! Love it. I recently added one to my collection , and a Predator mask P1 is my favorite style for sure....Bravo sir , excellent work indeed !

Thanks Tom! At the moment not planning to do a run but may consider in the future. I never molded and cast something so large before, so would need to practice before I ever did a run.
