My non-cosplay Star Lord costume

I posted over on another forum and someone suggested that I post a new thread so here I am.

First let me say that I love this place, I've been coming here off and on because you have some good reference photos and two it seem like a great place to learn about builds and see how others do things. I love watching how others think and do things. I for one am not that good, but I still love to do it.

So as for this thread, I was watching Guardians of the Galaxy for the 100th time because its a funny movie and I'm a huge Chris Pratt fan. So after looking at all the reference photos I could find including ones on here I thought it was about time that I would attempt to make the full costume. But, and here's the but. Not to for me, for a bear. Yes you read that right.

Its for a bear that I made.

Some people ask me why I make things for bears and not just things, but very detailed things for bears. Well for one its a challenge to see if I can do it and two, its fun and I love the challenge. Plus its a one of kind bear and there will not be another one out there. Pretty cool in my eyes.

Anyway, enough of that, here's the first part.

The Helmet, which took me a little over a week to complete. It's made from thin foam sheets, wire, sliver beads, foam core pieces, wood, paint of course and a layer of mod pod for a shinny effect. It is a steel bluish color with gold, my camera didn't want to pick it up and made it look a little green to me.

This is how big it is and it will fit over the bears head.

This is what it looked like before I painted it and added all the extras to it.

So whadda think? does it need anything or did I forgot something? I'm not a huge fan of the eyes, but I didn't know what else to use to make them look right. Please feel free to let me know what you would have used or if you have any suggestions.

Next to come will be the weapons, the rockets and the knapsack.

Awsome! And no hate on the bear thing cause i do it too. Ive done a couple of US Marine ones and a Vader Bear for my neice.

got them finished late last night

weapons are made from foam core cut into the shape, this was the 3rd attempt at them the ones in white. The other two didn't work like I wanted them too. as you can see the black ones also made from foam core were in my opinion had the wrong shape. the red ones were made by gluing three pieces of foam together and cut into the shape, but when I tried to file them smooth they kept falling apart so that was a bust then I went back to the foam and them seemed to work better.

I painted them the colors and added tiny round beads at the ends, then sealed it all in mod podge.

The boosters where made with a small dowel cut into the size I needed, sanded into the shape, painted the colors they needed to be and topped with another bead that was also painted. The middle section was a piece of foam core cut into shape and painted, then I use a small piece of thin foam as the straps.

The knapsack took me a little longer. (four days) Before I saw the thread on here by the one guy who I can't remember his name that made all those cool knapsacks. I sort of winged it off screen caps that I took. I didn't have the material that was used in the movie and the details would have been hard to paint on a small piece. I just used a small piece of pleather I had on hand and folded it into the shape, sewed it along the edge and glued things into place. The strap is pieces of foam cut into the shape and glued together. The rings are just bent into shape and attached with super glue. I painted the small sections and stippled with a blueish color to simulate the pattern on the bag after I saw his bags and the colors of the material. I wish I had the right color of material for it, but I just improvised with what I had.

Next up belt, Walkman with head phones which will only be for show and not wearing due to the size of the bears head, and the orb. The duster is also done, but the shoulder and arm pieces aren't attached. I will add those after I put it on for placement reasons. Those pieces are done though. the boots are also done as well as the pants, the holster pieces and the shirt. But I will show those after I get them added unless you want to see them now. let me know and I'll take some photos of those.

thanks for looking.

Thanks, I love that others make bears as well and have seen them, but theirs aren't made the same as mine which I'm happy about because I like being different.

I love the Vader Idea, its on my list of bears to make.

I've already made a Batman, a couple of Chef bears plus a student bear with a knife kit (I was going to Le Cordon Bleu at the time), a Robot from my book, Sam and Dean from supernatural and Bobby as well with his ball cap (that was fun to do). A ninja for someones birthday, a Traditional Korean bear, Two Geisha bears (one I gave away). A Dead pool bear (which I finished before this new bear), An Army bear for someone who's son passed away in Iraq. I was going to make a Bobafet bear and even made the helmet but ended up giving it to someone because one of my Chef instructors passed away last month and he loved star wars so it went into his memorial box. I've also made bag pipe bears and little house on the prairie bears when I live in IL. They have no shoes though because I never thought about it until I moved back to Texas. Now all my bears have shoes or boots and they can stand on their own.

I do have photos of some of them, not all because I forgot to take them. If you want to see them let me know and I'll post them up. If you have photos of yours I'd love to see them.

Awsome! Ill have to pull them out of storage sometike and take some pics. I love in west texas where there is nothing else to do.

Unlike most seamsters ive never owmed a sewing machine so everything down to my entire boba fett, snowtrooper, and scout trooper suits are hand sewn.

Alex

I own a sewing machine, but some of the pieces are so small its sort of useless to bring it out and sew them, so hand sewing is better.

I can't wait to see them. You could post them here, I don't think its against the rules, at least i hope not. :)

Two more photos of the progression.

Walkman pieces, The head phones are attempt number two due to the fact that I can't find attempt number one. Craft foam with a small wire glued under neath so it will hold it's shape, foam core pieces cut into shape and painted for Walkman and ear phones and the little sliver pieces that will be added for extra detail are from a blister pack after I was done with the sinus pills. :) The little back circles are craft foam. Just waiting for them to dry so i can put them together. I'll probably use a piece of black string I have as a cord and then just glue the whole thing to the belt.

walkman.jpg

and here's the belt already on the bear, side holster sections and of course the pants. Note, there are no pleats in the knees because the fabric I used was a bit to silky and wouldn't hold the pleat. The shirt is blue of course because that's what it looked like in the movie, so I used it. The sleeves aren't very long due to the fact that they won't be seen anyway and this is all of this type of materiel I had.

belt.jpg
The belt was made with strips of fake leather I had left over, the buckle is made from a piece of craft foam with small pieces of thin cord glued to the top and painted silver, the rings are also made from craft foam. Those were hard to get right, but they worked out nicely.

oh I forgot to show the Orb....

orb.jpg

Can you guess what its made out of?

Walkman is finished, I think it can out pretty good. the head phones are a bit bigger than the Walkman it's self, but I made it that way so the head band could rest over the top when its added to the belt.

Now I just need to put it all together and debate wither or not I add ears, because if I add ears, the helmet might not fit right and if I don't he won't look like a bear. Oh wait. I'll just do what I did for the dead pool bear. Make removable ears. Ya, that way they can be taken off and the helmet be added. That'll work. :)

Onto putting him together.

This is the longest I've ever spent on a bear (Over a week and a half, The Deadpool bear only took 4 days). I knew this would be a challenge when I first saw GotG, maybe that's why I put it off for such a a long time. But at least he's almost done.

Next photo will be the completed bear. Thank for looking at the short thread. if you see anything I might have missed be sure to let me know so I can correct it and add it to the bear.

10 days later and here he is. I present Star Lord my OOAK bear. Ears can be removed so the helmet will go over his head, he has his Walkman, the orb, his knapsack, boot rockets, weapons, ear piece (that you can barely see) belt of course and boots that took me a while to put together. Not perfect because I couldn't do the embossing on the duster, or have the right colors for certain items, but it looks pretty good for what I had on hand. (Oh the orb is actually a ball of tin foil that I pushed more details into it and painted it black and wiped off the extra.)

Thanks to everyone on this thread for all the reference photos that I needed to complete this bear. Hardest one I ever made. Hope you like him.

Now onto the next bear. Just need to figure out which one to do next. hahaha.
