My Newbery TARDIS build (Tom Baker era)

OKay, I take it back - glad you painted it blue. haha! Are you getting attention from neighbors and what not? I know if I saw one of those going up next door I'd be over there checking it out! So cool.

Some, all positive. Just let that home owners association say something...lol

OK... latest update... the roof!

With the Newbery model, the roof is not flat, but has a very slight pitch to it. The angle turned out to be only about 2 degrees.

I used a 1/4" plywood for the base, then framed it with 2"x3" around the outside edge. It was on sale, and I didn't see the need for anything heavier as this is a facade that will sit on the 3/4" plywood roof I already put up.

The box in the center is made from 1"x10", ripped down so the box is 8" across each side. The diagonal supports are just 1", ripped to the correct length and angle.

The panels that make up the top of the roof are the same 1/4" plywood I used for the base.

Here's a few shows of the roof construction.

I also got the roof finished, painted with 2 coats, lamp mounted, and managed to get it up on top (only fell off the ladder once). Then, I got the gaps all caulked up and cleaned off as best I could, let that dry, painted just the caulked areas and let it all dry overnight. I got the 2nd coat on the rest of the TARDIS after dinner tonight.

More pictures tomorrow, weather permitting.

today was a light day... I worked on the windows and top sign boxes.

I used clear plexiglass, cut to shape (carefully) on the table saw. Since the bottom outer panes will be the hammered glass, I made a sort of T-shape piece for the rest... painted one side flat white... used a 'Frosted glass' spray on the other side (the side that will be exposed)... put a bead of clear silicone caulk/adhesive all around... pressed into place... and screwed it in with some 1/2" screws (pre-drilled the plexiglass of course).

I'll update tomorrow with what I did on the top sign boxes.

WOO HOO! Found a local sign shop to do the door sign! Just put in the order and I am waiting for the proof. This is the one I chose. It's not 100% screen accurate, as the spacing & font are a little different, but for the Newbery model it's the right color, size, etc., so I am going with it.

Over the years I have seen a lot of Tardis builds, and lots of different ways they are built, and yours is very well built by the looks, and very nicely constructed, looking forward in seeing the finished Tardis.

Thanks. I appreciate the compliment.

Just got the first batch of lettering for the top signs, and was not happy... too bold. So, I found a different font, had them do a proof, and it looks much closer. Not 100%, but then again, what ever is, right? New letters should be here by Saturday, and I'll be able to complete the top signs. I think I should have the proof of the door sign tomorrow or Monday as well. After that, it's just the doors, and possibly a slight shortening of the roof box the lamp sits on... thinking it is a few inches too tall, but we'll see.

Got the right lettering today for the top signs. They are cut from vinyl sheets by computer, You just mark your surface lightly, peal part of the paper back, line up CAREFULLY and gently press the top half of the letters down. Then, GENTLY, peel the rest of the paper off as you press the lettering down.

Two sheets of plexiglass, one left clear and the other spray painted flat black. The letters stuck onto the painted side of the one sheet, and the other clear sheet placed on top to protect the lettering from the elements.

I had previously used the table saw to cut slots for the plexiglass.

Looks amazing.

Thanks, Guri. I should have her almost 100% by this weekend.. possible exception of the outer glass panels and the door sign.

Once she's 100%, I plan a TARDIS warming party. You and hubby are invited of course.

I was just starting on my build when I moved out of state! The neighbor took it, no problem! :facepalm

But watching your build is fun! I'm basically waiting for updates like.......

Ok, home stretch here folks...

Got the doors made over the last few days. Essentially, I made another wall panel and split it down the middle with the circular saw. Once I had both doors ready, primed and painted, as you can see here. Tomorrow... they get hung.

Again, the panels in the door look progressively smaller from the bottom going up because of the angle of the shot. Once they are properly hung tomorrow, I'll post pics.

And now, on to the windows.

As you've seen, I used plexiglass for the top row and bottom center panes. However, I wanted this to be as authentic as humanly possible (30 + years after the fact), so I spent the last 6 months or so trying to find 'hammered' or 'pebbled' glass.

I had found a source, but when I finally went back to place the order for 16 pieces about 4 months after finding them, they had jacked the prices up making it out of reach on this project.

I did some more searching, and found a local glass shop that had something very close. Essentially, it's pebbled 'security glass... with thin wires inside it.

I went and checked it out, since it was local, and it seemed almost too good to be true. The results are below. I attached it using the same silicone adhesive/caulk as before, and held in in place with painters blue tape until it set properly. I'll may make some kind of support strip to hold them in a little more securely, if the silicone seems too light.
