My new sandtrooper lid

Ok ive been collecting some parts and other stuff to turn my fx armour into a sandtrooper but this is my first real step into the dirty world...
I got a new helmet at the weekend from a friendly trooper here in the uk which he kindly finished all the hand painting part but left it clean for me to play with.
I used acrylic paints, dabbing it on with a sponge and then used crumpled paper to soften the effect and repeated several times but i didnt like the effect i was getting. So i washed it off and kept re-applying it and rubbing it off and so on.
Then this afternoon i gave it a going over with some artist oil pastel's and am a bit more happy with the effect of ground in dirt rather than obvious sponge marks.
What do you think, any and all tips and hints are welcomed..

I'm not a helmet specialist just a Stormtrooper/sandtrooper fan so I LIKE IT!:thumbsup

To me it looks PERFECT!! The way a Sandtrooper should look...dirty, but not too dirty. It's a fine line between giving a screen used look and a fan who didn't know when to stop. Weathering a Sandtrooper can take multiple trys to get it right. I'd stop now with your helmet :)

Great job. I'm glad you left the excess around the eyes, perfect touch for the sandtrooper helmets. :thumbsup

Agreed, top notch, I've always fancied dirtying up one of my many trooper helmets, but I'm always too scared :lol

Thanks guys this is my first attempt at trooper weathering, i think i shall leave it as is and should be starting on my body armour in the next couple of weeks or so :thumbsup

I think the hard part will be to get everything else to match up...

Forgive me for asking and risen up an old thread:$,but.....are you using a brush along with oil pastels?

Looks like a good start
i would suggest adding "dirt" around the edges
you know, like it is caught in the nooks & crannies of the helmet.

(yeah, I'm one of those "Fan who doesn't know when to stop" types :lol)

I used a sponge to dab on the paint and the oil pastels i just used as they were and then ribbed it with some crumpled paper towels.

It looks more patchy with more white showing through in these pics than it does in person :thumbsup
