My lightsabers & blasters thread (Compac Super Scope)

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Grenade Restoration Pt 4)

Not shining you on... this is my fave thing on this site in a while.

Looking forward to part 5... and when done, LOTS of high res pics of the finished restoration!

Wow, thanks guys. I think you'll like part 5.

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Grenade Restoration Pt 4)

Here is part 5. This whole process took about a day, but I didn't have to sit around and watch it. I did spent a lot of time scrubbing it with a scotchbrite pad, wire brush and picking the chunks off of it. A lot of the clean up process is not filmed and a lot was edited out like the majority of the scrubbing (it's not that fun to watch). There will be a part 6 and probably a part 7, but those should be shorter videos in theory. I'm out of town for the next week so it'll be a while before I do the next video. Enjoy

That turned out awesome! Considering the condition it started out in you've done phenomenal work on it. I had a suspicion that the frag body could be saved, so I'm glad that you went through the effort of giving it a proper cleaning! Great work!

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Grenade Restoration Pt 5)

Hope you took some shots for before and after comparison!

That turned out great!

The ammonia will give you a nice dull/flat finish like the bottom one here: http://www.therpf.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=617043&d=1461175789

I asked Roman to finish it that way for me to match my real grenade.

To get the darker finish on his weathered grenades he has used Birchwood Casey Brass Black.

I'll have to do that for weathering my replica...

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Grenade Restoration Pt 5)

im curious to what you plan on treating the grenade with over the years!

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Grenade Restoration Pt 5)

I don't have a long term plan for that just yet, I'm open to suggestions. Bluing perhaps, is there a general consensus on what the actual prop had?

I will post some comparisons soon, I'm in Seattle for the week and I can't seem to connect my laptop to the wifi in my room.

Interesting development in visiting the EMP museum here in Seattle, they have a sci-fi exhibit that has a couple lightsabers. According to the plaque the have Luke ANH, Vader ESB, and Darth Maul's. I inspected them and I'm pretty sure they are not correct in their labeling them. The Luke appears to have a Kobold clip on it, but it does have the glass eye, the number of t-track is correct but not cut at an angle. Also there wasn't a bubble strip or circuit board in the clamp, they were using the clamp to attach to the display. The Vader looks like the touring saber or possibly the Energizer saber. It was Graflex base, the clamp band appeared to be (cracked old) rubber, and edged with large o-rings, and it had a circuit board for the switch. Maybe all of this is known and I'd never knew about it, so let me know if I need to bother posting it.

I will post pics of the when I can get some wifi working on the laptop.

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Grenade Restoration Pt 5)

I'm a fan of bluing grenades. I have a real weathered grenade and a replica Blue'd grenade and they look almost identical in color. I will post a pic here later tonight.

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Grenade Restoration Pt 5)

Found some internet. Here is the oldest pic of the grenade taken right after I opened the box it was shipped in, and the latest pic I've taken of it. I included Roman as a control group.

The price you got that for was a steal, now!

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Grenade Restoration Pt 5)

Here's the bluing I was talking of...

Top is a replica blue'd... bottom is a natural original weathering on a real grenade...

So my plan is to take the red paint off, and use a little blueing on that top ring to match it back to the original color.

Cuz man is it close.

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Grenade Restoration Pt 5)

Ok, I had some malfunctions shooting this video and couldn't salvage anything really. Apparently I had the wrong settings for some shot and the orientation was wrong for others, sort of (hard to explain). I've tried to fix some of the shots but in the end I am not knowledgable enough to do so. I may do another video where I talk about the process and show screenshots that I can salvage from the video clips.

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Grenade Restoration Pt 6ish)

When I soaked my grenade neck in vinegar, I just used brasso and a cloth to get back the color... but then what you have there looks great for the actual Obi look.

Bluing is EASY anyway, so that will be super short video... I just poured some of the liquid into a ziplock bag, dropped in the grenade, and then pulled it out after a REALLY short soaking (it's fast!) then dropped in cold water to rinse.

That's awesome. I didn't think about brasso. I ordered the bluing last week, it should arrive in a day or two.

I do have a question: How do you attach a real hand wheel? It's not threaded like my Roman's one, I assume a nut and washer under the cap. I would think the nut would need to be thin.

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Grenade Restoration Pt 6ish)

It also depends on what your set up was before; i.e. single connecting rod or Roman's adaptor (or some other adaptor).

If you were using a single rod, as you've discovered, that won't work anymore since the hole for the real AS tap handle is smaller in diameter than the full lengthy threaded rod. In which case you'll need to connect everything in segments.

It is a single rod. It's a full Roman's replica. I noticed that the hole was too small. Looks like I'll have to get creative.
