My last Cap shield ... seriously!

Chris, How much force is applied to your stunt shield and is it only on the surface/face?
I am guess 200 pounds but at a tangent due to the roll.
Would you feel comfortable with about 200 pounds of force on the edge without damage?
Also are you going to cover the how-to of the machined star or will that bring on too many requests for the NOT Available for sale.

Looks awesome. I also would like to see a how to to make the engraved star. My first shield is going to use the star by Valor but I may want to try the engraved star in the future.

Wow. Congrats on cracking the code to the elusive Machined Star. Bravo!

Thanks, yeah, it could hold 210 lbs or more on the edge.. I know because I did a handstand with it on edge at one point and it was fine...and i'm 210 lbs.

The grooving was a pain in the neck, and this first pass looks real rough up close. I would still recommend using Valor's stars, gives a much cleaner look. I hope to improve this for myself, but it requires some expensive custom built fixtures, and you have to weld up the center hole and smooth it out.

Thanks for the guidance, Lots to think about. If I can figure out the parts and do what I have planned .... just don't want the mighty shield to become a red, white, and blue taco.

Valor
When you JB Welded the star on, did you coat the whole back of the star or did you do just a dab in the middle? Thanks

A Dab in the middle and a tiny bit stretching out toward the tips of each point. Not too far though. You don't want it squirting out.

Thanks Valor. I got my paint today, now I just need the shield to put it on:) It should be here any day along with the star I am getting from you. I just hope mine comes out as good as yours.

Another reason I wish my other thread was still around, we all went into this discussion at great length then. The movie used approx 24" - 26" shields. For a 26" or 25" shield, 10" center circle is good.

I copied this info from that thread as a note to myself;

He told me that the standard size for the rings are 20" 14" and 8". However, he stated that he can make them in 20.66/15.33/10 as well as 20.5/15/9.5. Overall the shield is 26" in diameter.

10 inch center.
---------------------------
The center (star) circle is 10" then each ring is 2-5/16". How did I arrive at that. First I started with the 10" center ring, then divided the remaining distance to the edge by 3. You gotta make sure the rings are equal or it looks wonky.

They're on ebay. Search for "aluminum shield blank". Or contact the company directly, Accurate Metal Spinning in Miami

I am seriously thinking of buying a blank and trying this myself, but have some Qs...

- How do people go about "painting the star"? Is there a template people use, or does everyone roll their own, or does everyone use the add-on?

- Curious why everyone wants the "brand new" look. I really want mine to look battle-hardened, kind of like this photo. Shield, Captain America, Movie | wallpapersup.net Any tips on how to recreate that look? Should I made it shiny first and then distress afterwards, or do something in advance?

There is a template in my build thread, below, that I used to engrave the star on a steel shield.

If you wanted to paint the star, guess mask the star and silver band, paint the red and blue. Remove the large star mask and re-mask the area so that you can paint the detail lines with a different tone of silver.

I'm with you on the battle hardened or at least aged look. It hides the inevitable scratches that a carried prop will eventually receive.

For the silver streaks, acetone on a cotton pad and wipe off the painted stripe. For the black marks either acrylics or pastels.

I realize I am a couple years late on the conversation, but wanted to say these look great! I am hoping to start my own project soon, guess I should have got going a few years earlier. Thanks for all your posts and pics!

Any chance you could PM me the details on where you got the shield from also? I remember seeing blanks on ebay a long while ago but never jumped on it :(
