Here's a couple pics of my efforts to make the golden owl on Dumbledore's podium...Wanted to make this for a long time... and finally got around to it ! ( still need to add candle sticks)...don't do much sculpting, so I had to figure stuff out as I built it !.....thanks for looking.

Used thick foamie sheets for the different layers of wings, along with wires to bend/ curve the feathers

Made a nice hard shell with fiberglass sheets and elmers glue ( so not to melt foam !)

Added a bit of light weight paper mache clay for feather/wing details

Carved the basic shape of body out of foam, covered it in a hard case (same as wings) added details w/ paper mache clay.
I also covered the entire owl w/ CAULK....its was a great filler, sculpted nicely, and looks very smooth once painted

primed black.

Globe lights up ( owl is being held up by rods that go thru entire body, thru globe, and attach to base )....has a 3 foot wing span.

That is gorgeous..... The feathers, the proportion, you did an amazing job. I personally think that you could sell casts, it looks that good. :thumbsup

Wow! I was expecting a reworked plaster of paris owl, i am really impressed, i think many who are not potter fans would love to have one. Very nice

Fantastic job! When I scrolled down I couldn't believe it was made of foam... I so wish I had sculpting talent like that. Now, you just need to do the big one for the spiral staircase...

Awesome sculpt, double points for light up globe

OMG! That is seriously amazing. I need to show this to my daughter cos know she will love it! Then she will beg me to buy her one Lol. Keep up the fantastic work!!!

Thank you guys for the comments....the people on this site make so much amazing stuff, im just happy you looked !

Do you have any pictures of the owl in progress? Why did you paint the pieces before adding them on, then again after? Or was this a little learning curve thing? But kudos on the sculpt, you clearly have the eye for detail good job!

Showed this to the misses (a HUGE Harry Potter nut). Now she wants one. DAMN. :facepalm

Do you have any pics of the fabrication process? Any plans to make a cast and distribute to the masses?????

the owl is multi-colored during build because I was testing different colored gold effects on finished pieces...the wings are glossy white because they were freshly coated with CAULK..once it was assembled and complete I primed it black and then lightly sprayed it gold ( helps create a darker /aged gold color, with more depth )....no plans to cast ( no experience ! )

Wow great work! A very unique piece too; I don't think I've seen any other attempts at this.
