my grail is done. what do you think?

well i'm starting it. a long ways to go. it's solid terracotta clay. it took me awhile to get to this point. i found these measuring bowls at ingles. and i used one of them for a base to go by. i molded the clay around a bowl. i left the bottom open just enough to push the bowl out as it was drying. this hasn't been easy. i've been trying to keep a close enough measure as i went along. but i think the cup part of the grail might be a tad big. i need to do a LOT of SANDING. i hope it turns out ok. i'll keep ya'll posted. in the mean time. here's a couple of pics to show you. thanks for looking.

That's a good start. This is a prop I'd like to make as well. I'll be watching your progress.

Good start! And yeah, since it looks like you're doing it the same way as I did mine, get ready for a lot of tedious sanding. Start with a something like 60 grit sandpaper to do the bulk of the sanding, then finer grits to smooth it out.

Does the clay you're using allow you to add more onto the fully dried parts? I know the type of clay I used didn't adhere properly on my test bowl, even after I profusely wet the dried clay like the instructions told me to. The pieces just flaked off with a little bit of pressure.

If your dried clay does stick together with the soft clay without any problem, then you have a lot of leeway for your sculpt.

Nice work so far. I strongly suggest a pottery wheel though - it'll help you get the symmetry you're looking for

Re: my try of the grail cup from i.j.last crusade

A friend of mine has just offered to make one of these by wheel for me, does anyone have any good reference pics they could post? Would be greatly appreciated!

Re: my try of the grail cup from i.j.last crusade

thanks for the compliments. i sure can't afford a potters wheel. they're way to expensive for me. pretty much free handed here. here's a pic. i got from another website with measurements. i hope this helps yah.

Re: my try of the grail cup from i.j.last crusade

the stem aint quite right. and i know i'm a little off on the shape. but i've been wanting to do one lol.

Re: my try of the grail cup from i.j.last crusade

That ref pic it terrific, many thanks! Are there any archived tutorials on her for actually painting/weathering a grail?

Re: my try of the grail cup from i.j.last crusade

Oh man, I wish I had that reference when I made mine. Oh well... next time =)

Re: my try of the grail cup from i.j.last crusade

that's alright, mines still way off anyway. but it will get there. i added more clay to the base and the edges. next stop is sanding.

Re: my try of the grail cup from i.j.last crusade

i got some sanding started. a long ways to go.

Re: my try of the grail cup from i.j.last crusade

Wow, that reference pic is excellent, great contribution! :thumbsup

I think this could look great after your sanding, but the key to this piece is the paint. I always found it difficult to get that ashy tone just right. What I did was after painting mine, I brushed on some fullers earth and worked it in, kind of making it dusty. Just a thought for when you get to that point.

Hey Dude,

I can´t wait until it´s painted. Looks cool!

I have a build log on my website here: Jack Doud's Indiana Jones Holy Grail but it looks like you're already doing better than I did. :cool:thumbsup

Re: my try of the grail cup from i.j.last crusade

thanks it's getting there. i'm taking my sweet time on it. 1 thing i like about this clay. i can always add to it if i need too. and it air dries. no kiln to worry about.
the stem aint quite right. i'm woking on it.
