My first time model making anything: Turbo laser

This is my first post so I guess I'll introduce myself first. My name is Eric, I'm in high school, and I have never made a kit/model/prop/thingy in my life. I was on you tube the other day when I saw this video. I don't know why it was recommended to me, but for some reason I watched it. Now as a huge star wars fan I thought the video seemed really cool, and the whole time I was thinking "That doesn't look to hard, I could totally do this." Somewhere in that video he mentioned this website, so I took a look at it and made this account. Adam also said in the video that boxy things are the easiest to make, and the first thing that popped into my head was a star wars turbo laser. Specifically the ones featured in DICE/EA's battlefront games. So that's what I'm setting out to make. I used a video from in game for reference. I would put it on here but it appears to be too big to fit on this post, but if you just search 'Battlefront turbo laser' on google, you'll see exactly what it is.

Anyways, I bought the supplies he uses in the video, and following his instructions, began my build. I started by deciding my scale to be action figure scale, just because if it goes on display, there is something to go with it. The figure seemed a little under four inches, so that would be the height of the bottom box section. I just kinda eyeballed the rest with that in mind, and started cutting the styrene. Then I started to glue the base pieces together, but when I was done I realized that I put them on a little crooked and it left a gap in the bottom. Although it is out of sight, so I just left it and moved on.

Next I began to detail the finished base. I used a ruler and pencil to draw all of those lines/plates. Each side matches a specific side on the in game model as close as I could get it. Then I took the knife and lightly scored over these lines so it has depth once it's painted. Unfortunately my hand slipped and missed by a lot on one of the cuts. You can see that in one of the photos. Then I made and glued all the little rectangles/details that go on it.

The door (or at least I think it's a door) proved to be a challenge. I didn't have little detail parts that matched it. There's supposed to be a rounded rectangular outline surrounded by like 20 little bolts. I had only six bolt like kit parts, and no door outline. My solution was to cut some plastic from the kit part box I have, and just deal with the fact that there's the wrong number of bolts. Then after putting it all together, the base of the turbo laser is fully constructed.

As for the top half of the turbo laser, I want it to be movable like the real thing, but I have no plan on how to do it. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

This post got pretty lengthy, I'll try to keep it short from here on out. I think I found a new hobby, I'm really enjoying this so far, even if I am in over my head at the moment.

Side note: I don't know how the picture thing works, so I'm just putting them all at the end.

Man, you’re doing great!! Please keep us posted on your progress.

I’ve always wanted to build a Death Star turbo laser tower!

Looks very cool! I have found that scratch building is a much more rewarding form of model building and when your done you realize it was all you!
