My Firefly-inspired custom pistol.. Finished 1-13-07

I'm a little late on this bandwagon, I know...........former second shift rat. I could only tape so much.

Anyway, I wanted to design a western-style revolver that might have been made in the future. A cross between old west and modern, but not an old gun with greeblies thrown on it (though that is cool, too).

The majority of it is aluminum, with a bronze front rod, brass receiver, and copper trigger and hammer. The trigger/hammer assembly WORKS, too. It sounds a bit like a cap gun. The grips are drying right now, so I don't have a fully complete pic, but you get the point.

I achieved the weathering by using Brass Black on everything- including the aluminum. I'll admit, it seems like too much, but I like it. So it looks like it survived a housefire. :lol But hey, maybe it's an alloy that oxidizes rapidly. Yeah, that's it.

I liked the "purty" version, though. Too bad I only made one. But I have some extra parts, since I upgraded along the way, so who knows.

1-13-07:
I finished the weathering, and dulled down the port side.;) She was listing a little too heavily to the left. I added brass screws in all the important places, and blackened them, too. The grips are done, everything looks antiqued, and I'm happy with it. :)

Different angles and details, some before I lightened-up the weathering. I know some of these are upside-down. That was intentional. I like looking at guns from that angle- it seems to bring out the design more. They seem to resemble some sort of intimidating spaceship/truck/freight train. This one makes me think of a Reaver ship when it's upside-down, especially without the handle.

Very nice work. I have one of your custom blasters. I really like what you've done with this one. You should show that off at the Blaster Builders Club.

I like. Looks like a heavy predecessor of Jaynes gun.
Kinda like the Walker Colt to the Peacemaker, if you see what i mean.

Nice job.

AAAAA.. Doug. Your avatar. Too much hair.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, I was obviously inspired by Jayne's gun a bit. Especially that top rail. I may pick up a Denix and convert it.

It's only around .38 caliber, with six shots. And the barrel is just huge for looks, and kind of a heat shroud. I also made the barrel a little longer than I intended.

I'm obsessed with Firefly now. I saw Serenity for the first time on HBO a couple months back, and picked up the DVD set a couple weeks ago. I've watched every episode about 4-5 times each so far. When I was on second shift, I was taping anything Trek, Stargate, Buffy, Angel, NYPD Blue, ER, Friends, and a bunch of other crap. Too much to keep up with. I was afraid to get hooked on another show. I'm sort of glad I didn't- I would have been heartbroken when they cancelled it.

I think it is cool that there are so many gun design choices from so many eras. Even the Wildey makes a bunch of appearances. Shiney.:D

Cool.
I like seeing new stuff.

One chunky gun. If you don't shoot someone just hit them over the head, that should do enough damage.

Hey Wuher, you have the long-ish one, that I put pebbled-rubber grips on, right? That's the only other custom I made, I think (although senility is creeping in one me). And the only one I designed AS I was machining it. :lol I literally wanted to build something for myself and goof off that night at work, found some scrap aluminum, and started trying to figure out what I could do with it.

I forgot who I sold that to. You always try to remember who adopted your children.;)

I just found my grandfather's percussion black powder dueling pistols in the closet tonight, too. I think I might add them to my display.

Thanks Dave, sorry I forgot to reply- I'm thinking about collecting the coins, and some other stuff, but I'm really mostly interested in some of the guns and costumes. I may actually try to pull off a Jayne-like costume for Dragoncon. If I can find a way to hide my face. :lol

That looks fantastic.

..Honestly, when I first hit the thread and saw the un-weathered version I sort of thought "Meh." No offense or anything. It just didn't appeal to me...looked a bit TOO cobbled-together, like some of the parts didn't belong with each other. The unstained grips might also have had something to do with it. I feel bad sayin' it, but there it is.

BUT. Once I scrolled down and saw the finished, blackened, weathered version, I fell in love. All the varied pieces and the unusual design just sort of "clicked" together when they had the common denominator of, um, weatheredness. Now I think it's fantastic.

I'd be proud to own it, and even more proud to have made it. :D

You collection is awesome.

I love what you did with the Nerf 8 shooter. I'm thinking of doing a BSG style with the new version Nerf released this year. My first Nerf repaint turned out like crap cos I didn't take the time to wash the plastic. Oh well, it was just a test mule.

Hey, Brass.:D

Actually, it's really not that heavy........maybe around 2-3 pounds or so. No more than Mal's pistol. It only feels heavy, when I try to twirl it (ouch). Funny thing is, every time I twirl it, I cock the hammer. :lol I'm not even trying.

Thanks, Patattack. The clean version looked better in person- the flash washed it out, which is why I took some of the finished pics without it. To let the weathering speak for itself. But I originally wanted this gun to be black, with bronze parts. I like the antiqued aluminum look, though.

Thanks, Motive-Alloy. I like the Nerf, too. That would make a cool Firefly gun by itself, and definitely a cool BSG gun. Originally, they were my Bly sidearms, because they looked most like the Clone pistol when holstered. I really just painted them black, and weathered them with silver. Later, I added some silver detail. Not much. I may still do something else with them, but you can't beat it for 7 bucks. :lol

Next up...........I'm making a custom sawed-off lever action DOUBLE BARREL rifle out of a Kentucky rifle kit. Yup. Octagonal barrels and all.:D

OH YEAH..........I meant to add this..........

The weathered gun is not painted in any way. It's all "Brass black" and chemically added. It will sand off, but no paint. Just oxidation.:D
