i'll start off by saying this was my first attempt at molding and casting, so i had some left over sculpey and an evening to fill entertaining my 10 year old daughter and as she'd not long seen the movie Labyrinth and loved it we decided to have a go at making the worm, we started off with an aluminium foil armature and after a couple of hours fiddling around with it we ended up with this.

this is pre baking and is a little rough, i had a nightmare sculpting the eye lids and this resulted in doing them with a needle, after the bake i smoothed him out with a little sanding, early on i decided i would be using taxidermy eye's so wanted to slush cast head so it was hollow, i made a couple of dump molds using some alginate putty i had been given, one full body mold and one head only i used this as a chance to try a casting of each which i could use as masters after a little clean up.

i made the join line in between one of his wrinkles, the alginate putty was ok for what i needed but didn't capture all the detail mainly due to my unfamiliarity with the product after saving some money i got enough together to purchase some silicone and resin which after a little dusting with baby powder (talc not powdered babies) i got a lovely clean detailed casting of the head.

i ground out the eyes and the back of the mouth to fit the eyes (acrylic cockerel eyes 9mm from ebay) and test fitted them luckily i correctly guessed the size of the eyes at 9mm

then it was on to painting, clear coat, gluing the eyes in and fitting the hair, i made the hair by stripping the individual pieces of the feathers ( royal blue marabou feathers also from ebay) a super gluing the strips together, painting the inside back of the head red to give the mouth depth, then glued his head on to the body.

this is how he currently sits, just needs a scarf white bristles for his head and blue bristles for his body
