My DL44 ESB Blaster

Pictures of my blaster. This is a resin DL44 in cold cast aluminium. I then undercoated in matt black before overspraying in gloss black. that gave a nice textured finish.

The sight was sprayed with two coats of brass. before being covered with gloss black auto paint.

Everything was then weathered by use of craft knife, sanding paper etc. I think the banged up finish on the sight is good, but I wonder if I've overdone it a bit elsewhere. I've basically put weathering where either:-

a) the gun parts come into constant contact with the holster.
b) are outside the holster (mainly the sight) and are likely to get dinged whilst walking about.

the last thing to do is a bit of dirt via pastel powder. overall I'm quite pleased at how this turned out because I haven't done any modelling at all for about 8 years. felt good to drag my stuff down from the loft and get everything out. Most of my paints were still useable too :D

opinions please.

Looks good, but a few changes I might suggest... Replace the knurled scope mount screws with brass hex head ones, the grips need to be a much darker brown, and give the muzzle a few light coats of flat black sprayed randomly to simulate the "carbon residue" look...

ok. I'm off shortly to get some hex head screws anyway. The grips I'm going to wash with a brown ink to darken them up. I've yet to do the pass with pastels yet so I'll give the muzzle a going over with that and see how it turns out.

Looking good! :thumbsup

I'm in the middle of making 3 DL-44s and I'm always looking for other people's builds for inspiration and for reference.

Thanks for sharing.

I agree. inspiration and reference are always good. :D I've never weathered something full size before. Only 1/48 scale models mainly and while the techiniques and principals remain the same, its a whole different scale.

I bet this would look great on film, but I can't help thinking I've overdone the wear on the sides a bit.

looks great to me -- often the weathering must be overdone a bit if it is to be visible, even if just looking at it in person. I'm not on expert on this prop, but I imagine the screen-used pieces were pretty beat up.

Very nice Lancer. I think your weathering looks great. This prop has to look used and abused in battle. Looking forward to seing pics of your grips when weathered.

:thumbsup
Cheers,
Neil.

what I am pleased with is how the sanding on the sight went.

it had 1 coat of matt black undercoat. 2 coats of brass, 3 coats of gloss black and was then sanded with rough 200 grit and then 800 grit wet n dry. the sight all over varies from visible brass, gloos black and areas of worn down paint so that the gloss appears buggered and matt.

ie, dinged from everyday use. In the holset the sight lies outside of it, so when walking along it would get bumped all the time, hence the weathering. I think the finish on is that best thing about the gun.

Overall i really like what you have done with this prop. I like the used look. But as you say you're not 100% done yet and i ihave to aggree with the others here i would like the grips darker and maybe tone down the muzzle a bit.

Thanks for sharing :thumbsup
