My DEFINITIVE Calamari Flan coins (The Mandalorian)

After many, many tries to get the process right, I have finally found the right combination of resin, dye and inserts to get what I think I saw on screen. VERY happy with how these came out.
it’s a multi pour process with the dyes and inserts to get the correct layering and dimensional look of items inside the coin. The pictures do not do them full justice.

I will have to make new molds of my masters before I can make anymore. The last set I made, the molds were sticking to them partly because I got anxious and took them out too early and partly because I’ve used them for about 60 coins in all of my attempts to get them right. LOL

More trial, more error.

I used semi-ridged (true transparent) resin for the last batch, but after my first two pulls, it started curing white?

I can only assume it was a chemical reaction to the glitter fragments inside.

They are still slightly springy, but how does a clear resin cure white.

So, back to the old tried and true, and 30 hours to cure resin.

I’m loving the inside layered effect, but it’s very clear. I may try to do a sand on the bottom to make it opaque looking, yet still see through.

Or maybe get some white dye and put a tiny half drop in it to give it just a touch of cloudiness.

In my head canon, Calamari Flan is like Gold Pressed Latinum, where the gold is just a medium to hold the liquid inside. The blue pieces inside of Flan are the currency, the rest is just casing to make it easier to carry.

The foil inserts ARE clouding it and making it cure white, BUT if you let the first pour cure completely and put the foil in as it’s tacky, then when you put the second pour in, it will turn white but BEHIND the foil, which you can still see the top layer is transparent.

And I know that these are not accurate, but dog on I like them!

Another batch and I think I have it pretty well figured out.

Combination of clear resin, added glitter into the wet mix, large glitter flakes added in after the pour and pushed down into it. I have to come back three times to make the pushes as the resin is setting to get the “multi-layered” effect I am going for, and it also allows me to get the larger flakes in at angles and positions, some horizontal and some vertical.

And one final shot next to one from the last batch that was too clear. The new one had the added glitter that, while not overwhelming it, adds a bit of opaqueness to them.

Have you thought about casting these in transparent silicon and dyed in the same way you've been dying them? It might add the squishy factor that's seen in the show. Either way they're looking great

Thank you for the feedback. No intention of casting any in silicone as I’m making them for me and have no interest in that.

Here is 4 weeks of casting, sculpting, moulding and resin. 130 in total. "THIS IS THE WAY"
