My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: Armageddon Freedom Shuttle (finished)

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

Glutton for punishment is right! But I know the feeling. If I see something not right in my builds I try to convince myself to correct it now, because it'll eat at me later if I don't.

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

I doubt that it's a filming miniature, it's not detailed enough. I'm bettin' that it was used in storyboard video's, or in some sort of planning for the camera moves etc.

I concur. If it IS an official Armageddon piece (I know what the description says, but those have been wrong before), it is likely an art department study model or a pre-visualization maquette.

As for your cockpit surgery, rather than carving out windows, how about once you get the shape back on, use some dark gray, then cover with a smoke tint (to simulate window gloss) THEN tape over the window outlines as though you were masking clear windows and repaint? Then when you pull the masks off after a couple layers of paint (and they can even be left on for the decal and flat coating process) you can end up with some nice simulated glossy windows which are ever so slightly recessed on the nose contour (the ridge of paint right at the edge of the glass simulating the window frames themselves). Since there is no interior, you don't necessarily have to see the inside and it works pretty effectively (better than using straight gloss black IMHO).

If I had gone this far I would definitely go the extra mile. You could finish the pattern for the cockpit up, and then do a nice vacuum formed clear cover. That way you can add a little bit of detail and have see-through windows, and paint it up like JMChladek suggested. It'll make a really perfect model all around.

That's really cool because the Studio Model cockpit/window section was separate too. Makes for a very accurate looking piece...You are such a friggin' awesome scratchbuilder/sander. You got some mad skillz, brah..

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

Here's where it is now:

Got the smoky plastic windows shaped & installed, and here's a trick- I put crumpled tin foil in the cockpit to reflect some light back out...

Then placed the new part & puttied the seam then repainted.

I can't show here in pictures, but the windows have depth to them with the foil in the cockpit- it gives the illusion of stuff going on in there.

Some detailing, decals and I'm home free.:behave

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

I'm sorry but those last pix are not up to scratch...... There are no Viper bits in them.

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

Wow! absolutely stunning!
Thanks!:)
I just applied decals- they're not 100% size accurate, but I don't have the time or coin to go purchasing models with a 33% smaller "U.S. AIRFORCE" decal logo to use.
Total cost for this project is a small $33, not including stuff I already had on hand.

All wrinkly from the microsol right now- when dried I'll give it the flat coat; pictures tomorrow of the finished product!

I can't think of any words, it's just so damn perfect. I love it. I want it.

Daaaaayum, I have to settle with the FP kits. :(

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

I'm afraid MY shuttle won't come anywhere CLOSE to the magnificence of that studio model...:cry

Anyway, painting has begun.

Like HELL it won't! Your model has to be the most awe inspiring transformation build I've EVER seen, this is so awesome..I don't think I can compliment you enough. It really is amazing. You certainly do justice to the Studio Models, hands down. Sir. You are the master.

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

Great job on the windows man!
This rivals the amount of work I had to do to make my AMT Romulan BOP more accurate.
Cudos to you Chris!

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

Okay fellas, my finished replica of Michael Bay's pimped-out shuttle.
Not as excellent as I was ultimately striving for (still off on some key lines), but it came out pretty good considering.

I caught some inner light reflection here...

Thanks for following my build guys, any questions, now's the time while it's still fresh in my head- ask me about it next month, and I'll be like, uhhh, I don't remember... how DID I do that?:lol

Wow! You knew what you wanted, you knew how you'd do it, so you just did it. Fantastic job, Chrisisall!:)

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

Coming from a master of the Asteroid Chase in still life 3D, I am flattered.:thumbsup

Honestly, if I'd had the bucks, I would have gotten a FP kit & saved myself a LOT of sanding... SO much less modding to get a beautiful result.
On that one all you need to do is move the canards farther forward, slant the intake openings, clip the ends of the wings & reshape them a bit then extend the back like I did on mine.
The rest is great as is.
