My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: Armageddon Freedom Shuttle (finished)

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

Just don't skimp on the paintjob as that can take as much work to do as the model if done right.
I'm doing it in a round-robin fashion, it's like a painting. Any suggestions will be welcome, but I think it's coming along. Almost half done (I had today off).

Oh, and I'm using some gloss paint- in the end it'll get a flat lacquer coat.

***** ****** that's perfect, blows my model out of the water.

Here's my FP build, the dude sent me a kit that didn't have the right side fins, but using two right sided ones I decided to finish it up while I was waiting for the replacement to arrive. This is what the X-71 would have looked like if it were landing in Florida, surely.

If anyone intends to buy the FP kit, do know that the decals are ****. They have no adhesion and fall apart like coffee cake.

Is it coming together?
The shiny parts bug me- I have to try & see it ALL flat like it will be. Windows are next.

I think ya have to change the title of the thread to "Hey I really did this".

LOL, I think I have to see the final outcome first!:lol
But it does seem to be working out.
Honestly, it won't be perfect. But I think it will turn out nice enough for the time I'm putting into it.
Coin: $25 for the kit, $4.00 for the additional epoxy putty, $3.00 for more masking tape, $4.00 for the Global Blue Krylon spraypaint-
$36.00 total cost (I had the rest of the various paints, lacquers & stuff on hand) for this project.
:thumbsup

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

Well, the gray shades look excellent (and the rectangular patches break up the silhouette rather nicely, disguising the areas that might not be 100%) . After decals and flat coating, I would say some pastel chalk work to give it a few debris dings will finish it off rather nicely.

I still wish you would reconsider though and stick the auxilliary rocket boosters on it to give it some color and MORE power. :D But hey, it is your build afterall. I am just glad you invited us along for the ride.

Oh definitely!

Nah, it was always intended to be a threading through the s**tstorm of meteor-bits shuttle. But thanks for all your advice & suggestion through my build! It's been really helpful. We'll see if it turns like I hope.:cool

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

I doubt that it's a filming miniature, it's not detailed enough. I'm bettin' that it was used in storyboard video's, or in some sort of planning for the camera moves etc.

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

Okay, this is where I stop today. Just carving the windows, and I have a problem. My tool is a FAIL. Not sharp enough & not SMALL enough. Gotta go to my hobby store.:facepalm

Funny thing- that's sort of how I'm gonna paint the windows, very light grey/white to simulate it in space and kind of show bits of the interior.

That's looking awesome, Chrisisall! :D

Hard to believe it was once just a shuttle orbiter! You have taken it to the next level, sir.

Thanks! But I knew I wasn't gonna be happy with the windows as I was proceeding with them... gorram NEXT level... I need access to BOTH sides to do 'em right. That means thrashing the cockpit area & fabricating a new one. :cry

I'm a glutton for work...:facepalm

Re: My Can-I-Really-Do-This? project: an Armageddon Shuttle

And as I have no pieces in the correct shape lying around, I have to make it from sheet styrene layers glued together. Oh joy- more sanding ensues...:facepalm
