My account was hacked!

Sold for 1 EUR - Out of Stock
Hey guys,

as most of you noticed, some douchebag was able to hack into my account! Very strange, since I use unique strong passwords for all my accounts! I also did not dispose of old PC's or smartphones where my passwords could be cached. I have no clue how this person obtained my password.

Luckily some members noticed this was not me and RPF staff locked my account after a few hours. I now have reset the password and I will activate 2 factor authentication on this account (I do not do this for all forum accounts I have, but I might reconsider now ;-) ).

I really hope nobody made any payment to this person, but as far as I can see in my PM box, only two people were contacted and none of them seemed to have made a payment. Glad to see nobody was scammed.

So people, remember: change passwords regularly, use strong passwords and consider two factor authentication. And never forget: ALWAYS use paypal and pay for goods and services, so you have buyer protection of something goes wrong! Keep safe!

Kind regards,

The REAL TomVDJ

Whole conversation is Here it’s sus as hell

Le listed with SE pics stock images and way low price. PP account is a cell store in Lagos Nigeria not some random cafe in Belgium called Lagos. Shared it all make up your own mind but on top of his aggression I’m pretty sure this isn’t Tom

Thanks, Sarednab! Already got my account back and now cleaning up all the mess of the douchebag that hacked into my account. Luckily it's just 3 sales threads and 2 PM conversations. I hope the RPF staff gets a hold on who this was! The IP that changed my password was 51.89.232.10.

well that was something last night! Worried to see accounts are being hacked so often lately, even ones that are used regurlay like yours. However, happy that it wasn't you because that was pretty bad!
I hope no one got scammed any money.

Thanks! First thing I checked was my PM box and only two people contacted "me", but did not pay yet. I expect a brute force hack or something. My RPF password is unique for this site (but not very strong, I have to admit. Mix of uppercase, lowercase and numbers, but no special characters and only 9 characters long). My e-mail account linked to my RPF account has two factor authentication, so I think that's not compromised (but changed it's password too, just to be safe).

Anyway, Set up a MUCH longer password for my RPF account now and activated two factor authentication...

I felt like I was watching the episode or Star Trek where the transporter created an evil, duplicate of Kirk who wreaked havoc on the ship.

Your hacker had a flair for photography…but seemed to feel the need to drop each photograph no less than 50 times within each thread they created. Quite the artist.

My favorite was how quickly he started insulting everyone. Nothing like giving a major tell. He sucked at mimicry. More like a shapechanger than evil Kirk. Ar least evil Kirk had memories he could use for familiarity.

But my biggie question is...... TomVDJ , have you recycled a phone or computer within your time of having that last password? It was reported to be a cell phone store for the paypal he was sporting, likely one that buys recycled electronics.

Nigeria? Yea thats a red flag. How did he hack his account and how long was he was masquerading as him ?

My favorite was he claimed to own a cafe called “Lagos” in Belgium and created some fake listing for it. lol

personally, that wasn't my favourite, that was what I found the most scary. That and the fact he explained in the sale post that he prefered to ship within Europe but could ship to the US.
There are a lot of RPF accounts hacks lately, it's pretty scary, and it really showed a knowledge of the community and some degree of research on the person they hacked. Knowing how to operate the junkyard, knowing attractive items to sell quickly, and knowing how to reply to PM. that is all pretty bad!

Glad to see how this community handles stuff like this... I got a mail this morning my password was changed, and a few hours later, I have the account back and see it was noticed almost immediately that it was not me. (y)

Also learned that the "strong" passwords of a few years ago, are now "hackable" in an hour by a simple brute force hack...

Nope, still use my very first smartphone. Previous phone was a Nokia with no mobile internet ;-). Also no old laptop or PC that I disposed of. I'm afraid just a "weak" password (8 characters, only upper case, lower case and numbers) and not two factor authentication.
