My 1st Prop from Scratch - Hellboy's Big Baby Build Thread

Here's a couple more WIP pics, trigger and sight have been modeled and 3D printed, caulk (which I can't say without thinking of Beevis & Butthead) has been painted. Ignore the wood-filler and other misc unpainted patches

Excellent progress

Thanks for the idea and compliments! I hadn't thought about it too much, the 1st one took a lot of time, although I guess the others would be faster...
I guess it would depend what the would sell for? Any ideas? The sideshow replicas sold for $795 I think, guess it would have to be less that that? Plus Big Baby weighs about 40Lbs, so shipping would suck.

But I like the idea, because in a public high-school, we're always broke. And it could definitely help fund our program.

Thanks for the idea, I guess I await what people think I could sell one for...

Depends on the finished produce but I think it would do well..
It would be out of my price range but I know that a certain amount of members would be interested!
You could always start a INT (Interest) thread in the Junkyard just to gauge the interest
Would be good to see profits go to a good cause too!

But it is awesome.. may I asked how the butt was machined or made?

The butt (which isn't quite shaped perfect yet) was done by laminating a piece of MDF between 2 pieces of Alder (I think, maybe Oak), then roughcut on a bandsaw. Then I used a spindle sander for some more rough shaping. Then I used this cool new tool we had in our woodshop, not even sure what it's called, but It's basically like hooking up a rolling pin (wrapped in sandpaper) to an airline and going to town. It really allowed me to shape the piece, reminded me of a surf board maker shaping his board. Hope that makes sense.

Once the alder is stained, I'll paint the MDF core black and age it to make it look metal.

Hey all,

Need help again from an owner of the sideshow prop. Could I get a measurement on the shotgun shells that come with baby? Height and width should be all we need to model them in 3D and print some matching shells out.

Thanks much!!

overall the shell is 96mm
the brass part is 27mm and 38mm diameter
the red part is 69mm high and 37.5mm diameter

the brass part has a lip on the bottom of it that is 3mm high and 40mm diameter

Awesome!! :thumbsup

I'd be interested in one, but I wouldn't want to guess at what it should sell for... as I don't really know how much time you've put in to it.

Do you plan on painting the Big Baby on the buttstock?

Your Big Baby project is looking outstanding!:thumbsup I am really enjoying the progress pics and story as well.

I have to agree, the weight is a huge factor if anyone plans on hauling this thing around in costume! I had the opportunity to hold the SideShow version for a photo and just doing that was tough! Take into consideration, I was using my right arm to support the weight of the gun; the same arm which had been carrying around the Right Hand of Doom for hours.

For display purposes, your version and the SideShow are tops. I like to be able to display and handle something that both looks and feels "authentic." But for costuming and carry, it would be great to have a lightweight stunt version.

BTW, I had been considering buying SideShow's Big Baby at the time of this photo, but just hefting it's weight for that brief moment changed my mind!

Again, great work, and I will be watching this thread with pleasure!

Michael

We've just put one together made out of foam and cardboard tubes. Means it can actually be held in one hand at arms length like Hellboy did.

Well, I was planning to laserprint it onto a clear sticker, then vinyl cut the letters. It's been suggested to use a water transfer, although I'm not sure the benefits that would provide over the clear sticker...

But yes, one way of the other, big baby will be on there. I'm actually staining the stock as we speak...

Thanks for the kind words

Here's a few more WIP shots. Most aging (via a hacksaw) is done, ready for more paint. The stock has a coat of stain on it, probably 1 more needed.

Here's the "musicbox" that will go into the back and will connect (somehow) with the winder (seen 2 pics above)

very cool.

Just mentioning a problem we hit with a clear decal. The big baby logo has white eyes and teeth and as printers don't print white they are left transparent on a clear decal. We ended up painting it on in the end.

I would cut both the letters and the big baby head in vinyl, and use those a paintmask. Place the masks on the stock. Handpaint the area white and place the laser printed decal of the head on top of this. I provides the white background and will give and illusion of it being hand painted.

Sweet idea, I think I've got the equipment to do just that!

Here's some more WIP showing the music box in rough place. Also we've got the BPRD plaque modeled (thanks Kenzo) and printed, it looks awesome

A few more pics, I'm getting close to being done I think. From what I can see, and feel free to tell me differently, I've got the following things to finish:

- order clear labels, print color big baby, place over white mask
- make twisty music thingy work
- fill last few screw holes and paint
- find (or model and print) some big chrome flat head screws for the butt stock
- paint age layer
