Must Have Blu-Rays?

Picked up three Nolan films at a Best Buy sale this weekend: Batman Begins, TDK, and Inception.

I'm still curious about two things:

1.) Does the Watchmen Ultimate Edition (with, like 4 discs) still exist? Or did it only run for a short period of time and then get taken off the market?

2.) Is there a 3D version of Avatar available on blu-ray? I haven't seen one listed anywhere, but I could've sworn it existed at one point.

Blu-ray version of the Ultimate Edition is not readily available anymore, only DVD is still available from Amazon.

I am still on the fence about buying the Ultimate Edition. It includes the theatrical cut and director's cut with Tales of the Black Freighter being permanently integrated. Though it would be great to see the 3.5 hrs footage once in a while, wish they had offered the director's cut with seamless branching option for Black Freighter so we could also watch only the director's cut when needed.

Watchmen Blu-ray: The Ultimate Cut

Nuts. On both counts. I was curious to have the Black Freighter stuff interspersed with the story itself. Although from reading at least one review, it's a bit of a clunky approach. Guess I'll just content myself with the director's cut (which I was gonna get anyway).

And that sucks that there's NO availability for Avatar 3D right now. Especially since I planned on buying a Panasonic 3D and blu-ray player anyway.

Yeah, after seeing the Ultimate Edition of Watchmen, I realized that I am very happy I own the Director's Cut instead. The Tales of the Black Freighter stuff is interesting to watch once or twice, but it is too different from the main movie to flow properly when interspersed throughout.

Get the Director's Cut and be glad you did. I consider it vastly better than the theatrical cut and just plain better than the Ultimate Cut. And when you feel like seeing the Black Freighter, just watch it standalone. It makes more sense that way anyway.

In the original comic, the black freighter stuff connects on a panel-by-panel basis, and even fits in to the same panel as the main story. I guess that's one of the limitations of the film medium in this case. Oh well.

No matter. I'll get the director's cut, and maybe watch the Black Freighter stuff later.

The Black Freighter stuff interspersed within the movie is great.

Good to see Avengers on your list. That is a hell of a "must have". I can't wait until it releases on blu-ray.

But sadly unavailable to me. I wouldn't midn owning both versions, but I can see where just hard-cutting to the Black Freighter stuff wouldn't quite flow as it does in the comic.

I don't mean to turn this thread into a "how is ___ on Blu-Ray" thread, but I was just thinking...

Akira...anyone here picked up the newest transfer? It would be stunning if done correctly...

Just an update here:

So far, I now have

Inception
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Game of Thrones Season 1
Watchmen -- The Director's Cut

In my Amazon shopping cart, I currently have:

Gladiator (Sapphire series)

North by Northwest

Alien Anthology (I'd get the first three on their own, but they end up being about the same price as all 4)

Master & Commander

Big Trouble in Little China

Now my big debate: What to have as the "inaugural" film for the new setup (when the TV finally arrives).

At the moment, I'm debating between:

Inception (saw it in an Omnimax theater, which sucked, so it would almost be like seeing it new)

Watchmen (never saw it in any version)

One of the movies in my Amazon cart currently.

A Netflix rental of The Avengers.

I'm shying away from the Batman films, since I JUST saw the later two within the last month. I might use them to demo scenes, but otherwise I think I'll leave 'em alone for a bit, until the third one's out on BR.

I'm holding off on buying Blade Runner because of the impending 30th anniversary edition (I'm wondering what will be different there), as well as all of the Marvel films because I don't want to get nailed by a double-dip. So far, I haven't bought any of the Phase I films on DVD or BR for precisely this reason.

Forgot to add one more from my Amazon cart: L.A. Confidential, which I am assuming will be absolutely sumptuous on BR, based on reviews and my love of the film itself.

Watchmen. Definitely. First, you haven't seen it - what better way to break in a new setup than with something unfamiliar?

Secondly, it's something visually outstanding, which is a must. Inception? Not so much.

But what about Avengers? I mean, assuming I can actually get it on Netflix when it releases (I'm waiting to buy because of the inevitable Phase I box set).
