Are you sure the pin wasn't spinning? The pins are held in with glue only. The knobs are threaded and screw onto the pins and probably have Loctite on them. Is there any play at all to it? Can you see if the pin is moving underneath the scope? The pin could have snapped, but I doubt it would do that. Even if it did, you should be able to pull the pin out by grasping the knob and pulling.
