Well my Port Nacelle finally froze up for what appeared to be for good so having more balls than sense (according to the Mrs) I took the trusty razor saw & got to work.

I got the dome tabs off - Thay pop off pretty easily
I then carefully worked around the dome sawing between the dome & nacelle a little at a time.
I was then able to work the inner dome loose & get it spinning again

The biggest problem I had was re-doing the frost on the dome - I tried several things, but wound up just sanding it for the time being till I find a better solution.

Once the spinning dome was working I lightly & carefully epoxied itt back in place & a dap of CA put the tabs back in their place.

Good news! The patient is recovering nicely back on the entertainment center!

WARNING: The photos below are not for the faint of heart.

Very nice. I have a question. Are those black squares that are in the same position as the LEDs also LEDs which are covered so that you only see indirect lighting from those? I can't tell if they are chips or LEDS. You are a brave man but I would do the same thing. The Enterprise is just not the same without the warp engine effect. Thanks for posting the photos.

It appears that the white boxy looking things close to the hub are the orange LEDs and the others are the flashing? Did you take any photos of it with the lighting effect on?

This is the only pic I took of her lit up with the domes off. Although I imagine I'll have to go back in at some point - Maybe remove the screws and see what's behind the circuit board...

To re-frost the domes try using a clear flat spray paint. This gives an excellent frosted look to clear parts. I used it on the clear parts on my Martian War Machine in my avatar.

Yes, Testors Dulcote is an excellent spray flat. Nice pic by the way!

More balls then sense is right :eek
A couple of questions...
  1. What seemed to be the issue once you got it apart?
  2. Why did it stick?
  3. What did you do to unstick it?
  4. How are you making sure it does not stick again?
Please post pics of the completed repair, if this works I might consider doing it myself...

Seeing those big fat screws on the LED circuit board makes me wonder what happens if you unscrew them, would this allow the motor and gearbox to be pulled out?

I tried a glass frosting spray on it, but it shrunk or something & formed cracks all over. Maybe I'll try some testors dullcote.

I also tried an unconventional interesting idea. I sprayed Krylon matte finish then dumped cornstarch over the wet paint. It actually worked good in the areas it worked in, but was too spotty. It was also too white as the starboard dome was more gray.

I still don't know the issue other than the gears seem to be frozen up. To unstick it I used a more direct method of tapping and grabbed the shaft & rotated it till it was loose. As far as not sticking again I'm sticking to my 10-15 minute a day schedule of running the engine. When/If I have to open it again I'll probably try to make the dome tabs functional which will make access much easier.

If I open it again I'm going for those screws too and seeing whats behind them.

I'll try to get a pic of her lit up tonight.

Looks OK to me - Not sure if I just caught an odd moment with tthe color diference in the first pic - She sure is a tough girl to photograph. My wife says it looks fine to her & she likes to make up flaws to screw with me! The only problem I'm seeing is the port dome is a little too transparent when the engines are off, but it's not noticable when they are running. I'm going to wait a while to see if she freezes up again before I mess with it any more - So far she's running fine!

Just thought I'd post an update - She's still running fine since her surgery with no problems at all (Knock on wood!)
