MPC Snowspeeder "I NEED HELP" Please!

Don't you just hate when you take out a kit, that has been lying around for a while, thinking that it would be an easy build. Just find out how many things you have to change just to satisfy yourself.

History so far:
I bought this snowspeeder kit along with several others SW model kits last year from a fellow member here on the board (I can't remember his name, wich is a real shame, 'cause he gave me a really nice price on all the kits and shipped them as soon as he recieved the payment for them. And good communication too).
It has been sitting on a shelf for almost a year now.
I build one of these 10-15 years ago. And as far I could remember I did't have to do much to get a fairly accurate model..... I'm sure several of you guys made similar mistakes :p
Any way after just half an hour of looking at the kit and reference material, I made the the dessicion to alter the parts as much as my skills would allow me, to get a more accurate model. And yet another 10 minutes later....

I know just what you mean. I have taken out and put back on the shelf the Snowspeeder kit so many times...

Here is as far as I got this last time (a few weeks ago). I just keep seeing those monkey pilots and they kill me every time. I began altering them to more human proportions.

So you're scratch-building it... Why not go bigger? It looks only a tad bigger than the original kit...

Yeah, I finally disciplined myself to finish my old kit to clear it off the shelf. Now I'm going to buy another kit just as a template for a larger version. So much for clearing shelf space.
 
On the pilots, I took casts of the Capn Carboard X-wing pilot head, decapitated the monkeys, and replaced their heads with the CCX heads... Worked pretty good...

Well..... I have thought of that. And the smaller of the studio scale models is almost twice the size of the MPC/ERTL kit. But I have no idea waht kits where used for the Studio scale models. On the other hand should I go for the 46 cm version or the bigger 71 cm??? Yes, I know... most of you will probably say the BIG one of course.
The blueprints for the model shouldn't be too difficult to make. There are a really nice one in " The art of The Emire Strikes Back". I could scan that and clean it in Adobe Illustrator. And I happen to work with large scale printing, so a print of a nice clean blueprint sholdn't be a problem either.
Are there any of you guys who are up for the challenge of identyfing the kit part for this model??? 'Cause I haven't been able to find out what they are. Maybe something from theTamiya 1/35 Flakvierling where used on the main guns...

Anyway, just a little prgress shot of the interior of the cockpit. I decided that it use a little more decoration.

I think cutting out the holes on the the engine/flaps boxes makes a huge difference. I have placed a small piece of plastic card on the inside of the box. Only the lower hole has been cut out in this pic. But I'm going to do them all.
And some more of the detail has been sanded of.
Its strange how much detail this kit has that is wrong and how much it needs to look like the studio model. Funny that thae original cunstructor of the kit went to so much trouble of adding the wrong kind of detail...

I have started doing some blueprint drawings......
 
I decided to go in another direction with the cockpit than I had first planned. This ofcourse means more work..... Why do I do these things to myself???.. :rolleyes

I know the gun isn't completly accurate, but I think it looks better that the part that came with the kit.

And if anyone has any kind of input to this project, please let me know.

Wow, I was kind of thinking about trying the same thing but your definitely taking making the mpc snowspeeder to a different level. It looks fantastic so far. I'm definitely interested to see how you put the whole thing together. It looks great so far. :thumbsup

First thing a common audience will notice is the paint job (note I say "common" -- not a true afficianado who can truly respect your talent)... Make sure you nail the finish work. I have no doubt you will.

I've got a nice collection of reference shots of the MoM model, but you may also have them -- they were all grabbed fairly easy off the 'net... Plus a handful from my personal visits to the exhibit...
