MPC Millennium Falcon Conversion

I focused on the docking rings today, using the VHS drum heads that Jaitea sent me along with a lot of styrene

I think they need more fine details, the basics are there right now. Might have to rummage through my etched brass collection

I painted the fanblades with a mix of light grey, brown and deep blue. There are several layers of different shades and they have a burnt out appearance in-person

The vents need repainting, the paint didn't stick to all of the metal. Does anyone have recommendations for paints??

Then today I spent a few hours figuring out the new cockpit net, printed my design off and cut it out

Then in 1mm styrene, this took about an hour to do both parts

Aaand then I put the oven on too high and melted the front plate. SIGH

I've picked up the habit of working on the floor...my cutting mat doesn't fit on my desk

I'm gonna guess you're under a premium for space and expense; you should make a card-table sized "hobby platform". Take some 1" MDF or doubled ½" plywood for the surface, add an apron of 2"×4" on the bottom with a 2" overhang of the top for clamping. Basically, a stocky 3'×3' table with no legs. You can slide it away somewhere, like behind your desk or a dresser, and then take it out and put it on the floor when you model, and it's a pretty cheap item to build provided you have a circular saw.

As for the paint not sticking to the grilles, it may be that there is oil or lacquer residue from manufacturing on there. Maybe scrub with a dot of laundry soap, warm water, and a stiff brush? A shot of sandpaper on there might also give the paint more tooth to adhere to.

I'd absolutely love one of those but my room won't even fit a 3' x 3' table haha, or at least it could, but it would fill the entire available floor space in my room and I'd have nowhere to sit :(

My desk is bolted to the wall and is about 35-40cm deep, so there ain't nothin gonna go behind that! There is literally no space to store it either, all the space that will fit that kind of thing is stocked up with sheets of materials. It's such a bummer!

This build just gets better all the time, love the engine vents,....love the new cockpit, the engine deck looks cracker......hooked!

I think I've read somewhere that brass should be washed in vinegar or acetone before priming.

Aha...I've dunked them all in brush cleaner and then hot soapy water in an effort to get rid of the existing paint and to clean them off. No idea what I'm doing really but it seems to work. I'll try vinegar for the rest of the etchings (y)

I like where this is going.

I sure I hope it's going somewhere good

You are far too kind John no joke about it.. And the cockpit eh...well.. let's just say it melted into another life haha. Gonna have to make another one I guess. Say how did you do yours? I've been trying to work it out. I used 1mm styrene when I was attempting mine, but I came to thinking that something like 0.5mm would have been better

I used the original cone that came with the kit to use as a template to wrap pretty thin plasticard around, I sprayed the card with adhesive mounting spray....(only the part that wraps to itself.....I masked the surface that would end up against the original cone)

Once I was happy I cut off the waste card & glued all exposed layers with poly cement, I did this twice because I messed up the scale the first time,...second time was much easier

I'm on hiatus from this project for a few weeks while I cast up these kits and focus on my college work. In the meantime, here are some card/paper models I've made in my design classes for tha laffs

Enterprise refit model, I reckon it's the same size as the PL 1/1000 kit... took me 2 hours to make, from memory

And a card Falcon I'm making, I got more in depth with this than I'd anticipated, I had intended to just draw the details on but then I started making the bigger details and the amour plates and well....
Again, from memory, and eyeballed proportions so they're slightly off
Spent 4 hours on this one, I'll try and finish it tomorrow

That's all for now guys, keep your eyes peeled a) for the JY thread and b) for whenever I get back to this project

LOL!!!

Well if your in the pro build up business(or any other business for that matter) It's kinda out of sight, out of mind! I have many Different Falcons all over the place, Fine Molds Etc...Glad you liked it. Again, Great job on your build, When I have time, I'll be adding more detail to mine.
