MPC Luke's Snowspeeder model kit Question

I was lucky to stumble across this old MPC model of luke's snowspeeder, still in the box, all parts, but one part is troubling me, the upper main body of the speeder looks like it has a chunk out of it, though it was still in the plastic and their is no corresponding broken bit. It also is very smooth and rounded like it was molded that way but all finished kits ive seen dont look to have this part missing

Looks like a short shot - a molding defect where there wasn't enough plastic injected into the mold, resulting in an incomplete part.

thats what I first thought but the curve was so smooth it looks like it was purposefully done, unless they doctored it and packaged it anyways

Not supposed to be like that, I've had a least 2 models that where not complete in the past.
Fortunately it's an easy fix with some sheet styrene and a little spot putty.

I'd square off the area to make the addition easier than trying for match the curve.

@division 6 Good to hear its any easy fix, I have some 1 mm sintra lying around I was going to use for it.

@3d-builder I would have if the kit wasn't as hard to find as it was, and it only cost $15 so its far below what the usual asking price is.

@Madrid Boba that was exactly my first thought :).

Okay, first thing's first. That is not right--for a snowspeeder or that particular model. I have three or four in the stash and have built 3 or 4. That is a defect or it's been damaged. (Just to answer the original question.) And for 15 dollars, that's about right. I see them go for about $10 all the time and you add in shipping and you're at about $15. It's OOP (I believe) but more common that you'd expect. The last show I was at, a guy had one on the table for $2 just because it was missing the clear sprue. Silly since why would you use the clear sprue for that model? I've always cut clear styrene in pieces to fit in the frames because the kits clear parts make it look way too toy-like. Still, as said, your problem is an easy fix.

well its good to know that its common, well bad to know anyways :lol. Ive checked over all the other parts and they all seem correctly molded so I really just need to fix the one defect. I am surprised that you've found them going for so cheap though, must be a Canadian thing where they jack up the prices

well it took a while to get the supplies I needed to fix the defect, but seeing as its the first time Ive had to repair a model, I think it looks pretty good. a bit more detailing is needed to fix it up but im waiting on those parts

Nice job.
Will you be sanding it smooth and scribing the panel lines to match the studio models?

I did that to mine, I still need to finish it.

yes, I was planning on trying to get it as close to the studio model as possible, I shot some footage for a composite shot, went down a bumpy hill on a sled with a camera :lol, so I want it to look extra accurate.

Hey, that's exactly where I'm at! :) The MPC was the first speeder model I saw as a kid (was there anything else). I saw another kid holding it in his hand painted just all-white and I was drooling all over the place. I didn't get to see it long enough or close enough to examine it well but I held the vision in my mind and built a bigger one out of styrofoam, cardboard, popsicle sticks and other household bits. I never did get to finish the thing because I couldn't imagine what it looked underneath and without references back then it wasn't so easy (Hmmm nowadays I've got all the references I need and it still isn't easy......):wacko

The one I'm working on is the original one I built when the movie came out.
I took it apart and removed the paint then started sanding and scribing.
I haven't done much with it past the pic I posted but have the base for it partially built and was recently drawing up plans for some parts.

I was wondering if these was a color guide for the snowspeeder, there are tones of reference pictures and info but does anyone has a list of the colors needed for an accurate paint job?
