Movies That Should Never Be Remade (But If They Did...)

Princess Bride - Mark Ruffalo could totally pass as Prince Humperdink.

Halloween III. 8 more days to halloween, halloween, Halloween...I can’t stop watching it, unless they remake it.

Correction. With a plot line like this (a mix between what could have been a great film noir/horror film with the right cast from past and present), and writing (“this place is a zoo!”), real lens flare and a hard-drinking doctor who wants to be a detective, scenes that are a ripoff from national lampoon‘s vacation and death of a salesman (no spoilers), this is a classic on its own, even if there is a remake.

I picked up the Scream (Shout) Factory release of "Big Trouble in Little China". In the bonus features the original screenwriter details how it was originally written as a western. Forget the rumored Dwayne "The RocK" Johnson remake. I'd definitely like to see the original screenplay produced.

Back to the Future, Tom Holland as Marty and.... hmmmm, I’m drawing a blank on Doc Brown. Need some help with that one.

Not sure I understand this thread but The Nightmare Before Christmas should never be remade, but being a Disney movie, I predict it will be announced in the next 2-3 years...

The idea is, although the particular movie shouldn't be remade, as it was as close to perfect as possible the first time, if it were to be remade, what would be the perfect casting/director, etc.

With TNBC, I don't think it's likely, unless they decided to do a live action version.

There are just some films that cannot be made better.
I submit Escape from New York.
I just saw a pic of one of our members in Snake Plissken gear, but with short hair, and it brought Chris Hemsworth to mind. Maybe reboot the franchise with Carpenter at least producing. I mean, it could be worse...

Most of John Carpenter's hits are highly remake-able.

I mean that in the business sense. I don't expect to prefer most of those remakes over the originals.

We know how Halloween turned out, both the remake and reboot. How was Assault on Precinct 13? I haven't seen either version.

Altered States
Keep the performances and leave the plot intact, but I think the SFX scenes of both the hallucinations and body morphing could really benefit from some modern techniques

Moon Zero Two
An interesting film from 1969 which showed the Moon as colonized with regular flights, commercial infrastructure and working folks making a buck. James Olson stars as a former astronaut making a living moving cargo and doing odd jobs on commission. His ship, the namesake of the film, is a bit of a disappointment- the producers took a demo prop of the Apollo LEM and added a mid section to it. Catherine Schell also stars in it
What I like about this film is that it shows how everyday life would be like working and living in a lunar colony, it just did not have the budget and SFX ability to do it justice. It is a bit dated but I think like Altered States, keep the performances and update the visual effects with modern techniques

I recall the AP13 remake being decent fun. But it's been 15+ years since I've seen either one of them.

'Halloween' is easy to remake. But it's harder to remake it WELL than most of JC's old hits. The original's success was mostly in the cast, the filmmaking, and the low-budget midwestern feel. The idea was nothing special. This is true to some extent with all of JC's hits but it's very true with 'Halloween.'

I like Carpenter's 'The Fog.' I once started watching the 2000s remake and turned it off after a few minutes.

Remaking 'Escape from NY' . . . I think it's totally do-able, both financially and artistically. IMO it's a wide enough canvas that you could take it in several possible directions.

Yeah, there's still a high chance that a remake would get fouled up. But you could say that about literally any movie that Hollywood makes these days.

Two Miles for Sister Sara. A movie of too many ‘almosts’. There’s almost a shootout with the Mexican army. There’s almost a fight with Indians. There’s almost a mountain lion attack. And they gave away the secret that Sara is not actually a nun. I do love the movie. The ingredients for perfection is there, Eastwood, Don Siegel, Ennio Morricone…… But it’s flawed.
