Movie car questions...

got into a conversation with some friends about movie vehicles
3 questions we couldn't answer

1. What kind of car rear end was welded onto the back of the tanker in The Road Warrior

2. What the **** was that thing welded to the front of the tanker in The Road Warrior (someone mentioned it was from the front of a train, but it doesn't look right to me... too hodge podge)

3. What kind of car was Reese driving in the Terminator (the one with the gun mounted on it that got blown up by the HK)

anyone know?

For #2, The thing attached to the front of the truck is called a cattle catcher, which were attached to the front of trains, but there were several different styles made when they were used. You don't see them on any of the current lines here in the states unless it's an old steamer.

I've been working on a collection of movie cars for a while now

I already have the rig model ( a mack 600 recently reissued!)
and I've hunted down the tanker portion of it already, but I need to figure out what car is welded onto the back (get's pulled off during the road battle)

in between all that I'm working on Egg Chen's bus from Big Trouble in Little China, big headache as their are no decent size models of the subject, but I'm documenting everything as I build

The decals are done, body is nearly finished, down to the last bits of sanding and puttying.... so a thread on that will be going up when I'm done with it, which should be about 2 weeks with luck

I'm getting quite good at cutting 2 or 3 car body's to pieces and putting them back together. It's the research and hunting for kits that's the time killer. But I'm amazed how many cars share this panel or this hood with another car

The builds are fun and fast

so yeah, short answer... this is a bit of a research thread

screen grab for those who might know

You'll have to ask someone who's familiar with Austrailian autos because on the differences in the models there. It's a whole other world there.

Do a search of Mad Max cars. There are some good site that tell you every thing you ever wanted to know about the truck etc

well I've figured out that it's actually 2 portions of cars
one is the rear door of a station wagon (it has the hand crank for opening)

and then there is a trunk of a car (that i have yet to identify) that the station wagon door sits inside of

The IMCDB is a great resource, but no info there, plenty of other modeling ideas though

I do realize that most of the cars are Australian in origin, but even they share panels, hoods etc. with their American counterparts

I suppose the upside is, it only lasts for about 30 seconds in the movie, so I can always build the tanker with that portion ripped off...

I had a model of the truck mostly made then put it away somewhere years ago.
I also saw on the web years ago a complete diorama of the chase with the truck and trailer and several cars, all in 1/25.

I've heard that Semi-trucks in OZ often have something similar to these 'cow catchers' as protection against frequent collisions with indigenous giant marsupials. It seems kangaroos will stop at the edge of a paved road, look both ways, and then cross regardless if anything is coming.

I think the item on the front of the diesel was a snow plow from a steam era train, they differed from the cow catchers in that they were a more or less solid plate as the cow catchers were usually bars. Look at some of the steam engines they ran in the 1800 to early 1900's in Colorado.

actually, after doing some screen grabs it looks like both a cow catcher and a steel plate

early in the movie, there is a giant tubular steel bumper on the front of the truck. later in the movie, (after humongous shot the engine) it looks like they put a cow catcher on the front, and also bolted plate steel to the front of the tubular bumper

alrighty... after some research and a few dozen screen grabs being taken

the answer to the question:
What car is welded to the back of the tanker in the Road Warrior?

there are actually 2 car portions...

the lower portion of the platform welded to the rear of the tanker is a 1964-66 Chevelle Wagon (best guess here, as all the insignia on this section of the car, including the chrome trim has been stripped, but you can still see the holes in the body, and seeing as the tail lights are missing it's impossible to (at least for me) to be absolutely sure using just the film as a reference. But the contours line up, and the frame in the middle of the rear windows are in the right positions, as well as the wrap around of the bumper

the second part is the 5th door from a 1961-63 Ford Falcon Wagon. This was the rear gate of the station wagon that had a crank down window... close examination of the scene were they pulled out from the compound, I caught a single clean screen grab where the actual nameplate, ford emblem, and the hand crank for the window on the rear door can be seen. It is mounted as additional cover above the rest of the platform
