Monogram USS Voyager, the "I don't know what I'm doing" build.

Alright, watching you people build up all these awesome models has left me wanting to play too, so I figured I'd just jump right in. I've never built a model before so this is a learning experience, sort of modelling 101. I mentioned to my uncle that I had been contemplating building a model, and he went out to the garage and came back with this Voyager kit, an old AMT Enterprise and a cutaway Enterprise. I figured the Voyager kit is the most easily replaced if I ruin it, so I'm going to use it as practice. I want to do this up right with lights and PE, anybody have any good suggestions for lighting kits? Anyway onto the (slow) build.

The kits:

Okay, so what better way to start off then by making a rookie mistake? I figured the best thing to do is to start by light blocking. So I sprayed a few heavy coats of primer on the inside, and then a couple coats of gloss white. And hey, guess who forgot to clean all the mold release off before spraying? Yeah, so there was some bad reaction, I should have known better. But I sprayed enough that the light doesn't seem to transmit.

Then I bought a rotary tool and some tiny drill bits and some small files and set about opening up the windows. So far I've done half of the secondary hull, the lower saucer and half of the upper saucer. I'm making them a bit oversized and then I'm going to fill them in with something clear (maybe an acrylic monomer?), and mask them to the right size when I paint it.

That's where I am right now, still in window cutting hell at the moment, I'm running out of drill bits since they keep snapping on me. I would appreciate any pointers, suggestions, tips, criticisms that you guys might have for me. As well as suggestions on the best place to buy PE and lighting. Thanks for any help, and thanks for looking.

Ruddigger - I used to be near to a TAP Plastics and grabbed a sheet of PP for a large work mat for the kitchen. It's translucent and textured on one side while shiny-smooth on the other. Thin enough to cut with scissors and could be what you're looking for. Not sure how it would glue but it's cheap enough to experiment with...

here's the link.

BTW if you have one locally, they had a VERY nice scrap bin to pick through at a price-per-pound setup.

Thanks Makrel, I'll keep that in mind. Something like that might work as a backing behind the PE on the large windows.

Interesting! I have been researching this model for the past week....now seeing you work on it makes me want to get one for sure..!

During my search i found the two kits below on ebay...but these are for the voyager made by revell but i think both of these models are very similar so it might just work out.. there might be better options...if anyone knows please do drop a line..

LED LIGHTNING KIT USS VOYAGER

VOYAGER LED LIGHTNING KIT

i suggest -- following this thread, he has been building one..bad ass Voyager..check it out.

Looking good so far...keep us updated.

The acrylic monomer seems to be the way to go on the smaller windows, I just have to find a good place to buy it. I sure don't want to drive all the way into the valley to David's Dental like Steve did. I've heard that the acrylic powder for fingernails is comparable, has anybody used that?

I ordered the paragrafix PE set, and I tried to order the clear lighting parts from starfleet models but they're sold out right now.

Rewen

Woke up early with a hangover, so I spent the morning drilling and filing out all of the windows on the upper saucer section. The only windows left are the other half of the secondary hull.

Windows drilled:

I also ordered the clear lighting parts for the deflector, and I'm going acrylic hunting later today.

Drilling is always good for a hangover.

Looking good so far!!

Kenny

I find it helps to keep my mind off the headache.

So I made a trip to Sally's Beauty Supply this morning and picked up some clear acrylic powder and liquid. I did a test on the stand since I'm not planning on using it anyway, and it came out perfectly. Man, this stuff smells awful!
v9.JPG

Then I tried the secondary hull. Tape the outside, put in some powder, and apply the liquid. Here you can see the windows are filled with powder and the first few have the liquid applied already.

Bubble City. I don't know why, but about half came out bubbly, which is weird because my test was perfect. I may black some of them out, which I was planning on doing anyway, or I may drill them out and try again. Any ideas what I did wrong here?

And I did half of the upper saucer. Guess which half? Less bubbles this time, but still a few.

Tomorrow I'll finish off the windows on the upper saucer.

I yes the small is hard .......don`t use it i your sleeping room......

hm I never had bubble`s before what kind of tape you use ?

May the glue on the tape as an reaction wit the liquid.

ore there was not enough powder and in the drying process it suck some air and the bubble move in the acrylic.....

try to use as less liquid you can ......

try to get this ones they worked well

Withe the bubbles try to drill a small hole just were the bubble is and use the powder again. The liquid should fix it try it just with one window first ...( just an idea)

my email is ruddigger0001@yahoo.com

I know that I'm missing the windows that go on the C deck, I believe the PE has a template for cutting them out. Are there others?

I'm using 3M blue painters tape, I don't think the tape is the problem though.

Great job, Rudigger - that's some real work you're doing for a very first model! I remember my very first model - a Matchbox Henschel 1:72. Still very vivid in my mind - even the smell of the inside of the box, the colors of the parts and sprues, the excitement of pre-and post-bulding, but especially the pre-building - even before opening the box. No one ever forgets their very first model.

Thanks man. I'm hoping when it's done I remember more than just the frustration that I'm feeling now. Lol.
