Update 8/12/16:
I realize a lot of my photo links are broken. In November, 2015 the two photo hosts we had been using both dropped our photos, completely by coincidence as they were different hosts.

We are slowly working on this and if you search for my username you will notice how many threads I have and how many photos have been fixed and how many are left. This thread is one of the oldest and these photos are among the more difficult to fix.

Update 6/18/07:
New pics on page 9 of the thread.
Here is one:

Well, a buddy and I started this project a year ago and it seems like that's how most of my projects go. It takes me a year to really get them moving along :unsure :

I was at a point where I needed to finish it so I could free up this huge chunk of clay for some other stuff ;)

The chest:

The eye piece:

I wasn't happy with it so I sliced it up

But not before making a mold of it :p hehe.. here is the fresh casting:

I had to take a different approach for the hood or cowl, whichever you call it :icon_wink:
I made two ovals from plywood and bent the plastic around it to get the taper and filled it solid then I carved out the details in the buck.

I didn't take a pic of the dome sculpture progress but here is the first pull:
Even has the little nipple on top ;)

For some reason that dome is really tough to photograph. They all come out blurry and that's the best I could get :unsure

My buddy is working on the cod piece and a couple others right now so I should have them soon to clean up along with working on the backpack :D

This is still going to be slow cause I have to squeeze little bits of it in here and there. All of what I just shared has been progress over the past year.

Meh...I guess that looks okay. I suppose, if you're into that whole accuracy thing.

:) Of course, I kid. Awesome job.

Looks fantastic.. I've been seeing a lot of Snowtrooper work lately whereas for years it was like striking gold to get a nice costume completed.

You got me with the slicing up the eye piece. I was like WHAT. And then with a slight scrow down i was like... WHEW.
Beautiful work Cal. As always;-)

Very nice work Cal, very nice :thumbsup

You never cease to impress me with your sculpts. Have you just sculpt the chest plate from a lump of clay or is there a body cast underneath and do you make any kind of templates?

Ditto here. :lol

Awesome work tho...can't wait to see how this progresses..

Inspiring. (and intimidating at the same time).

Great work, it's also good to see the mold as a mold. I am thinking of one day maybe making this set of molds as well, and to see be able see what a really good set of molds looks like, helps to visualize the whole thing.

thanks.

Very nice Cal. :thumbsup

After I get my ANH Vader the way I want him, a Snowtrooper is next on the agenda for me. I already have the muclucks (sp?).

I really like your work progress. As a person from Norway where they filmed some of the scenes this is a costume i really like. I whould like to make all of the softparts. One REAL WINTER version with wool material and other material made for the winter weather. I am also planing to offer a Summer verion that will be ideal for warm countries when trooping. Here we got winter over 50 % of the year so we sometime need some warm clothing. Ideal for european or Canadians :)

Maybe this is something we can work together on?

B-E-A-UTIFUL. Nice work. Are you doing the shoulder bells on this one as well? Very nice, cant wait to see progress.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the kudos. I for one love to see progress that people make on their projects so I like to share as well :)

I scaled it the best I could from all available reference and similiarities to other armor. That is just one solid lump of clay. We could have put something under there to save on the clay but eh .. what the heck ;)

Goldenrod, yeah I was starting to chop it up and thought .. hmm.. this could be a cool picture and maybe tease someone with it :p

I do actually have the bells done. I made them with my at-at stuff a long time ago.. forgot about those :)

Nice use of the wood on the shoulders, those turned out great.

what's your process?

Sculpt in clay
Cast negative in plaster
cast positive in Hydrocal
vacuform

Or something else?

I put in a long day yesterday getting a couple more pieces ready :)
