Alginate is a cheap one time mold making product. you would pour over your clay, let it dry, then make a mothermold , usually out of plaster, and when that was dry, flip it over and then tear out your clay. Then hopefully, and usually the mold comes out clean and ready to use .

I would suggest that you look at the smooth on kit that is a brush on mold. Yes you could make multiple copies with this. I would just worry about a one time mold that did not come out perfect. This may just be a personal fear because I do an occasional mold out of "smooth on " with hard castable objects and if the mold did not work, I could always make another one

Be careful with alginate, most types of it dry out VERY quickly, and aren't any good for a resin cast. They're good for immediately filling with plaster, which is no good to you. Find a silicone kit and use that. You should be able to get enough silicone for a helmet for less than $50 (unless shipping to you is high).

Some people may also recommend you try using silicone caulking as a mold material but I have tried it and I can't really recommend it. It missed details, leaves bubbles, and sticks to the casting material much more than mold silicone.
