molding coins?

I've never moulded anything before, and I was wondering what kind of problems people who have would expect me to run into if my first attempt at it is with coins. I'd like to replicate this buffalo nickel pendent...

I'd want to use .999 silver if it matters.

Would a plaster cast work? What would work better? Possible to do on the cheap?

Would I lose all sharpness/definition?

apparently carved coins are called 'hobo nickels,' and you can find a bunch of terrible ones on ebay
