MK38 Igor build (04/29> Painting and detailing)

Re: MK38 Igor build

Oh my god this is amazing already! I'm gonna have to stop lurking or I'll just just keep ending up here!

Re: MK38 Igor build

Yeah, the girlfriend wasn't too pumped to see that in the middle of the living room :lol

A fairly boring update, but the initial abs and cod are together. A lot of detailing to go, but for a rough fit everything is looking good. I'm hoping to get the leg components together the first part of this week, and also assemble a proper stand to support the torso (and keep it out of the way, if that's possible). I'll also be picking up a lot of electrical goodies on Tuesday, so I can start test-fitting the camera components. Soooo, hopefully there will be quite a bit to post this next week :thumbsup

It'll be nice when I can get these pieces attached together, not just 'laying in a pile') Thanks for taking a look!

Re: MK38 Igor build

that's alot of foam! it's impressive how quickly this is coming together. i'm so gawdawful slow when i build. of course i kill alot of spare time watching other peoples builds :) i'm looking forward to see how you do the back details

Re: MK38 Igor build

Wow! That is the cleanest foam build I have seen on here. Excellent work!
ERRGGGHHH!!!! It looks clean, but honestly patience is what makes your builds look clean! Honestly, I put a lot of time into my work all the time, but you will know what's clean and not.
What are you using for this build?
Sears Best-Step Mats for the starter.... Those mats are great, and they're what most people would use... The thing is, they have a melted texture on the back, which ruins detail work. I use two sets of sheets now...

man. . .that was fast. . .

Hardly.... Maided I follow you with most everything I do... To remind you guys, I do have a full-time job. AND, important to remember, I'm an insomniac. And a Pisces. :)
Beyond anything else, maided I'm going to find a time to meet you.

Re: MK38 Igor build

So you use 2 to make both sides the same texture? How do you get your forms to look that good and scale things to your body? I'm sorry I'm new to this stuff and just very interested in how your doing this, it looks a lot simpler than pepakura with bondo and fiber glass

just don't overdo it just like what i did on my previous suits:lol well at least you still have time to do this huge suit, its easy for a regular sized suit but man, this is huge, and that makes this build stand out to all other foam builds :thumbsup

and oh. .. i'm also insomaniac and a pisces :lol

Not quite sure I understand your question... I would assume same texture, you mean same side opposite? What you see is foam building, and at this scale it is not easier than paper.

Dude really? Awesome. The latest updates, with your suit legs, let me get this done. If I make this as good as I think I can, I think we can trade. If it's OK, I'd like to ask your opinion on this as well.
To clarify, it's not a kissing-ass thing...

Re: MK38 Igor build

Lol OK and you said you use two sheets

Man Of Steel

Haha my mistake, let me clarify.. I use two types of foam, one is the Sears Beststep that has the heat-stamping on the one side. the stamping actually gives the walls a little more strength, but it also can't stack perfectly flat. If you took two pieces back-to-back, there would be a VERY significant gap that would need filling later. Everything in the pictures at this point is Beststep foam.
When I get to the detail pieces, I'll be using Cross-linked PE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene Foam, Closed Cell Foam Padding, Foam Rubber Sheets). This stuff is smooth on both sides, and can be stacked very nicely. The down-side is that they lose a little of the strength (without the heat stamp), and the sheets get parallel lines running across then from the industrial cutter that can show up on your work if you don't prime and seal enough. These ridges are very minor though, I've built three suits out of just that foam (I thought they were done making BestStap mats) and they came out great.

FINALLY got the thighs built. I'm going to try getting the stand together in the next day or so, just to get this more manageable to work on.

I also got the new monitor in for the cam system, it's a 7" display and looks like it's going to work great for the application. Just a quick screenshot of the display before I call it a night:

Re: MK38 Igor build

A small update... Shins are assembled, and I'll be starting on the lifted boots this evening. I also started reinforcing some of the pieces with expanding foam, starting with the torso's shoulder openings. They will probably take the biggest beating on this entire suit, from the wearer both using the arms and resting his own on edges.

I also picked up a new cctv camera for the main front vision, temporarily hot-wired it up to the suit's LCD display, and am currently spying on my neighbor's driveway :)

Actually, not so much spying, as testing the suit's Li-Ion power supply. I set the cam and monitor up, and I'm going to let them run until the system starts to fail. Not very scientific, but I also don't trust the specs on most electronics these days. Lastly, got a pic of a bit of the suit together while I was moving everything around today:

Thanks for looking!
