Mixing color with resins/liquid plastic

I haven't ever really had a need to do this, but I might now. What kinds of strategies are there besides dyes from mold material companies? Does anyone have any good tips for mixing color into a liquid plastic casting material (something like Smooth-On's Task series) while retaining the physical properties of the material? Paint? Dye? Ink? Food coloring, haha?

I once ran out of dye for my slushing polyurethane resin - so I sprayed a good amount of rattle can colour into the white resin to give it a grey-ish colour.

Seemed to work well, no probelms with its strength

There are dyes made for this.Your resin supplier should have them.

What kinds of strategies are there besides dyes from mold material companies?

I usually get resin dye from marine supply stores. Although color is limited, you get about the same amount if not more, for a third the price.

I would only use the pigments made for the resin you are using.You are taking a chance if you try to "wing it".

Michael's has some casting resin dyes that I used in breakaway bottle blend plastic.

Smooth-On makes a series of tints in a variety of colors (SO-Strong® Color Tints for Urethane Rubber, Plastic and Foam). I use less than a drop of black to tint my resin (about an ounce at a time) so that if the paint chips, there is a dark color beneath. I have been using the same bottle of tint for over two years.

I have also used the SmoothOn So-Strong color tints and they go a long way.
