So has anyone thought about doing a run of these?

IF that is a real MIT ring, be VERY CAREFUL about replicating it! There was a discussion on the Jewelry CAD board I'm on about class rings. Schools, specially Colleges are hard core about people making copies of their rings. They WILL sue you without a doubt, it's happened.

I am under the impression that if one were to make their ring slightly different...different enough that one would not get sued:angel

Here is what the actual ring looks like, aka "The Brass Rat"

(Looks like the one pictured above is dead on...and not a variation).

^ You'd need to drop the MIT and the beaver mascot off... but that would be pointless then. You can try, but this jeweler ain't touching that with a 100 foot pole...

well, making props for movies in the industry vs making REPLICA props in a hobby for profit are 2 very different things. Like most watches in movies when not shot close up are usually fake or empty cases that are used in Salesmen sample trays. You really don't think "James Bond" is running around with a real $5,000+ Omega watch on his wrist the whole time...

MIT could have either donated a ring or gave permission to make a 1 off copy, that wouldn't be mass produced and sold to non alumni. Or bought it in a pawnshop, who knows.

Replica props are a touchy subject, but when you're dealing with replica name brand watches and jewelry it gets even touchier! They're much more hardcore than the studios. Hell, designer David Yurman actually sued and WON against several other jewelers he said were copying his designs, when he takes some of his designs straight from Celtic/Norse art. Some how he was able to copyright an ancient form of art!

I'm not saying you can't do it, I'm just suggesting you think twice about it. I'm in the jewelry industry and also in the prop hobby, so I kinda know that it might lead to a bad situation.

Infact the Watches are original Omega, The Swiss Watch Group that has a licence to use the name James Bond to advertise, supply the Production team with watches to convert and to wear on screen, Even the Rolex in Live And Let Die was Original.

Regards.

Spike.

if someone is in fact doing a replica ( a bit changed of course to not get sued) count me in

Keith you're getting all "Toby-ed" about this costume. lol !

Love the passion brother - call me sometime !

I may be wrong here, but isn't an MIT class ring just like EVERY other class ring in the sense that you order it out of a catalog?

Mind you, I have never purchased a class ring due to the fact that I wouldn't want to advertise that I graduated from a crappy state college. As I remember, there was a poster in the book store with picture of ring styles and an order form. Anyone can buy a ring. You didn't even need to graduate. I don't think you even need to have attended the school.

Like any onther class ring, there will be choices of style, size, precious metal, and type of stone. Do you know the combinations for the Stark ring?

I was thinking the same thing as clonesix. Hell you can even get replica Superbowl, world series rings. Ordering a cheap school ring was in the low $200's on a MIT site. Tell me you cant find a starving student willing to buy you a ring for a few bucks.
