Mirror Universe Star Trek: First Contact Uniform - WIP

Mirror, Mirror has always been my favourite episode of the original Star Trek, and I've always loved the concept of the Terran Empire. So, I was kind of bummed when DS9 showed us that the Empire had fallen, as I really wanted to see what it was like in that era.

Well, if the TNG episode Parallels taught us nothing else, it's that there are an infinite number of parallel universes, and in at least one of those universes, the Empire must have survived.

This costume has been years in the making - from original concept, to the gathering of the various pieces, and making some that couldn't be found (the communicator badge). I still have to acquire the dagger, and an agonizer (and get new rank pips, as I can't seem to find mine), but it's pretty close to being finished, and I wanted to show it off a little.

A friend of mine scratch made a spot on Enterprise era Terran Empire uniform. I'm thinking I'll debut this at the Star Trek con in Vancouver this summer, alongside her Mirror T'Pol :)

I haven't decided if I want to wear the jacket more casual and open:

Or zipped up and tucked in:

In my concept - the sash is no longer gold, but instead, displays your departmental colour. Command: Red/maroon Sciences: Blue Engineering: Gold

Here's a close-up of the communicator badge. It was made using a resin earth/dagger symbol I bought from an RPF member 5 years ago named Charlie. I then used cardstock to build the "wings", had a friend of mine do a casting of it for me, then I sanded and painted it.

The casting of the badge was rougher than I had hoped, so didn't come out quite as nicely as I had expected, but hey...it was free, and looks good enough :)

Hope ya like it :)

Sweet! That looks awesome!!!

I think I like the closed look better, looks more like the ent ones.

The open one looks more piratey.

But still awesome!!!

Ha! Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about the open look. They are pretty much pirates :)

Still gotta do medals as well. Really wish I could find replicas of the medals used on the ENT uniforms.

Cool look. I am more partial to the open look, for more or less the same reason. A more 'piratey' look

thats awesome! i love the concept, and the final product...
i agree, you need a little more bling on there... some medals and such...
also, you should go with a different phaser than the playmates one... it ruins the look a little... i'm sure someone here has a cheap resin one....

Yeah, I want to get a better phaser - the playmates one is the only one I had on hand. Worst case scenario, I'll at least repaint the one I have.

For the rank pips, I was thinking of doubling them up, having them on both sides of the collar, instead of just one side.

I like it! I just read the Shatner Mirror Universe books... That is sorta what I would've thought it would look like. :)

I had considered doing a buckle with the earth/dagger symbol, but that's beyond my skills at the moment. Something like the Admiral's buckle would work, if it were more Imperial looking ;)

I haven't read Shatner's MU books, I'd like to - are they worth the read?

Thanks for the kind words everybody.

I love the MIRROR Universe stories - props - and uniforms.

The ladies uniform is tough. Not everyone can wear that one.

They have to have a more conservative one for those who cannot wear that one with the bear low cut midriff.

That's a great costume - but get used to the fact that if you're next to Mirror T'Pol, nobody is going to be looking at you... ;)

As for the badge, I don't think it looks any worse than the ones used on-screen. Those things look great on film, less so in person. Until someone gets real close, that one should do fine.

Slightly off topic, has anyone ever seen a Mirror version of the ST 2-6 maroon uniform? I know there was an arc in the comics a couple of decades ago dealing with that era, but I've never seen anyone in person wearing one.

That is great and glad to finally see it almost fully realized.

I am most impressed with your Sam Browne belt (in fact, where did you get it/how did you assemble it?), but I wonder if it is too pirate-like with the belt over the red sash? I think the belt worked in Enterprise because it was a simple "martial" add-on to a flightsuit.

I do like the idea of using the sash color to denote department. I wonder if it might be a little bit "too creative" for the general convention masses and may be lost on them. From my experience the piece most people identify is the shiny gold sash.

I really like the comm-badge. A lot better than some other attempts I have seen at merging a MU with FC.

Instead of pips, I had an idea using the Enterprise-era rank pips and place them low on the left breast of the gray-padded area just above the black. Otherwise I think regular pips will work fine, placed opposite of their Prime counterparts. I think two sets of pips would be too much.

...

Oh OH here's a thought...what if you designed something similar to the shiny Sam Browne belts used on the alternate Enterprise-D in "Yesterday's Enterprise"? I think that would be a good place for your Earth & Dagger custom buckle. You could even use a simple rectangular buckle as a placeholder (or none).

...

@ SmilingOtter: I am in the process of putting one together but it will be a WHILE before I have anything to show (busy finishing one costume before starting another).

Man I love it!

Personally I think the "casual" look works a little better. And I think the Sam Browne belt should stay as is (up to you of course). The Terran Empire were very Pirate like after all.

As for a WOK era mirror uniform- I saw one back 1996. Guy dressed as Mirror Spock. He had the WOK jacket with a gold sash, and a Terran Empire symbol grafted onto the Starfleet chest badge (basically the Red Earth covered the Starfleet crest). He had Spock's beard and was sporting a ponytail. May have had the thigh-high boots as well. Stupid me I never took a pic of him.

It was awesome! As is this! :thumbsup

Cool premise! I had a thought, though. Since the mirror universe uniforms generally show off more skin, had you thought of using the vest from the uniform instead? I'm thinking the vest, over bare skin, might have more of that mirror universe look. Or even the vest with no undershirt, beneath the jacket might be a good alternative look.
Just some thoughts. I like your costume as it is too!
